As a die-hard anime fan who’s been around since the ’10s, let me tell you, the news about Kyoto Animation‘s new project is as exciting as Mai Minakami trying to juggle cats (and we all know how that usually goes!). I remember my first encounter with Nichijou, and it felt like a breath of fresh air in the anime world. Now, with Keiichi Arawi teaming up with Kyoto Animation again for City, it’s like finding an old friend you thought you lost.
If you’ve been a fan of anime since the 2010s, then you’re probably familiar with Nichijou. This series is quite challenging to explain, and that’s due to its unique brand of surreal comedy. Back in 2006, creator Keiichi Arawi introduced Nichijou through a manga, and with Kyoto Animation’s assistance, the comedy gained a cult following. Now, the studio is collaborating with the creator of Nichijou again, so anime enthusiasts might want to prepare for another wave!
Recently, Kyoto Animation unveiled their upcoming projects, and one that caught attention was the work of Arawi. Known for his creation of Nichijou, Arawi is collaborating with Kyoto Animation to adapt their manga City into a television series. As per the studio, the show is set to debut in 2025, making it a significant milestone for Kyoto Animation. Notably, the studio has not taken on any new intellectual properties in approximately six years, but City will change that trend.
Kyoto Animation Goes From Nichijou to City
If you’re not familiar with the series called “City“, it began airing after “Nichijou” concluded. This comedy is a slice-of-life genre that frequently explores bizarre themes and motifs. The story revolves around the Mont Blanc Trio, a band of university students who become acquainted in the city as they traverse adulthood’s challenges. Characters such as Midori Nagumo, Ayumu Nikura, and Wako Izumi all have distinct personalities. Due to their tight bond, the Mont Blanc Trio frequently finds themselves in unusual predicaments, and Arawki emphasizes their unique brand of humor that leans towards the surreal.
If this story seems reminiscent of Nichijou, that’s not surprising because they share similar themes. Arawi maintains a distinct style, and when something works well, there’s no need to change it. Nichijou is a slice-of-life series set in the town of Tokisadame. Characters like Yuko Aioi and Mai Minakami add vibrancy to this series. The anime primarily unfolds within a high school, where Nano Shinonome navigates her relationships with her peers. Despite being an anxious android, everyone has their own challenges, including Nano.
What’s Next for Kyoto Animation
As a gamer, I’m thrilled about the upcoming adaptations from Kyoto Animation! In 2025, we can look forward to the release of their take on City. This project follows the release of Sound Euphonium 3 in the year prior, 2024. Additionally, they’re working on an anime adaptation of Hiro Yuki’s 20 Seiki Denki Mokuroku, and a movie based on Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid. This film will be set after season two of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, with a planned release also in 2025. I can hardly wait!
