Once again, twelve new bakers are preparing to step into the tent, each eager to win over judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood with their exceptional baking abilities. Ranging from farm manager Mike to pediatric nurse Georgie, these contestants bring a diverse set of skills and backgrounds to the competition.

In my humble opinion, although the bakers are fresh faces this season, the backdrop is strikingly reminiscent of a familiar setting. This year, The Great British Baking Show has made a delightful return to one of its long-standing filming locations, but I’m left wondering where exactly it’s nestled.

The Great British Bake Off is set within the beautiful grounds of the Welford Park Estate, located in Berkshire. From 2014 until 2019, the show was filmed at this estate. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, filming temporarily shifted to Down Hall. But in the year 2022, production resumed once again at the enchanting Welford Park Estate.

According to Country & Town House, it’s common to find a well-known white marquee erected near Welford Park House and its circular-towered church.

It’s reported that former “Bake Off” judge Mary Berry had a particular affection for the Welford gardens. As the competitors labored and perspired over their challenging technical bakes, it seems she took pleasure in pruning the roses instead.

Before moving to Welford Park, the setting for the series shifted among several places such as Fulham Palace in London during its first season, Valentines Mansion in Redbridge for the second season, and Harptree Court in Somerset for seasons three and four.

What’s the history of Welford Park?

Welford Park boasts a rich history that spans over four centuries, with its grounds serving as a popular backdrop for “The Great British Bake Off” television series for quite some time.

Once upon a time, Welford Park served as a peaceful monastery. Later, it transformed into a hunting retreat for King Henry VIII, a passionate deer hunter. Afterward, this historic site was bestowed upon Sir Thomas Parry, eventually rising to the esteemed position of Treasurer within Queen Elizabeth I’s household.

Throughout the years, I’ve seen the manor pass from one family to another, with the Archers and Houblons becoming its proud owners in the 18th and 19th centuries respectively. Nowadays, it’s under the stewardship of James Puxley, a distinguished Lord-Lieutenant of Berkshire’s Royal County.

During the First World War, this property additionally functioned as a convalescent home for wounded soldiers. The bedrooms were transformed into hospital rooms, while the nurses stayed in makeshift dormitories.

After that point, Welford Park started serving as a backdrop for various film, television, and photoshoot productions. Notably, it has been utilized by the BBC, Love Productions, and Channel 4.

Can you visit the Bake Off tent?

Although you can’t step inside the tent since it’s solely used for filming the show, you are welcome to explore the estate where it is filmed instead.

Every year, Welford Park organizes various seasonal activities, with the annual Spectacle of Light event and the Snowdrops of Welford Park starting from 2024 among them.

The Great British Bake starts on Tuesday 24th September at 8pm on Channel 4.
