As a dedicated Batman Arkham fan with over two decades of experience under my utility belt, I must admit, the whispers of a new Rocksteady game have filled me with an electrifying sense of anticipation. It’s been far too long since we’ve had a proper Arkham adventure, and the thought of diving back into that dark, gritty world once more is almost too much to bear.
Almost a decade has passed since Rocksteady ended the Batman Arkham franchise.
Indeed, we made a brief return with a VR version, and the Suicide Squad game was set in the same fictional world; however, it wasn’t identical to the original.
A fresh speculation has been spreading that the cherished British production house is considering diving into the world of Batman once more.
As a dedicated cinephile, I’m on the edge of my seat, eagerly awaiting what’s next for the Arkham universe. Will it be a reunion with the beloved franchise, a fresh start ala James Gunn’s DCEU overhaul, or something completely unexpected? The suspense is killing me!
In fact, very little is known yet, but that hasn’t stopped the internet from being ablaze with speculation. Here’s what’s been said and whether any of these rumours hold any merit.
Why are people talking about a new Batman game? Rumours explained
It’s uncertain which studio fans are eagerly anticipating a new game from, but there’s word that Rocksteady Studios are working on something again. On the other hand, it seems like Sony is attempting to cash in on the project, humorously speaking.

Rumors about a fresh Batman game from Rocksteady Studios started swirling in September 2024, after XboxEra podcast co-creator Nick ‘Shpeshal Nick’ Baker hinted that the UK team was once again involved with the project.
In a post (via X), Baker mentioned, “I’m not certain about the specific studio where people’s dreams lie, but I’ve heard that Rocksteady are working on it again.
Others have proposed that the game might only be available on PlayStation 5. However, we haven’t been able to confirm this claim beyond mere speculation.
As of now, there’s no confirmed news from Rocksteady, so consider any talk about it as a casual piece of speculation.
Will it really happen? Our speculation
It’s not yet confirmed by Warner Bros or Rocksteady that there will be a new Batman game developed by Rocksteady, but it’s still possible they might announce something in the future.
It’s logical that Rocksteady might revisit the series that established their reputation as the premier superhero game developers worldwide, given they haven’t developed a complete Batman game since 2015’s Arkham Knight.
Rocksteady’s history with Batman titles can be found below:
- Batman: Arkham Asylum – August 2009
- Batman: Arkham City – October 2011
- Batman: Arkham Knight – June 2015
- Batman: Arkham VR – October 2016
More recently, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, a loot-shooting game featuring characters like Harley Quinn, Deadshot, King Shark, and Captain Boomerang, was launched by Rocksteady Studios in the Arkham universe, in the month of February 2024.
The game received widespread criticism, with Warner Bros acknowledging that it was a “disappointing launch” which negatively impacted its earnings during the first quarter of this year, as reported by GI.biz.
As a follower, I share the concern that Rocksteady might close its doors, but for now, it remains operational, albeit with the possibility still lingering.
From a passionate film lover’s perspective, if I were in the studio’s shoes, I would be strongly considering a return to the Batman universe. This move seems like an almost certain success given the anticipation that surrounds it, particularly since many fans are eagerly waiting for a Batman Beyond adaptation.
In addition, we got another Batman game in 2022 titled Gotham Knights from WB Montreal. However, this game didn’t live up to critical acclaim, and it’s suspected that sales weren’t strong. For example, the PS4 and Xbox One versions were even cancelled.
Moving on, we are currently developing the VR game “Batman: Arkham Shadow” for Oculus. This is scheduled for release in October, courtesy of developers Camouflaj. As for further updates about Batman, no additional information has been disclosed yet, so we’ll have to stay tuned.
Regardless of circumstances, a potential new Rocksteady project might be delayed for quite a while, if it comes to fruition at all. It’s conceivable that we could see it in the year 2030 given the usual development timeline.
If you’re eager to play something immediately, we strongly suggest checking out Marvel’s Midnight Suns and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. These two outstanding games didn’t receive as much recognition as they should have.
