As a gamer who’s been through countless hours of immersive storytelling, I can confidently say that Out There: Crimes of the Paranormal is a must-watch for any enthusiast seeking a unique blend of real-life mysteries and supernatural intrigue. The series, much like a well-designed RPG game, takes us on a captivating journey through various towns and cities across North America, exploring tales that are as human as they are otherworldly.
In 2021, Joshua Rof? and Mark Duplass teamed up for the three-part Hulu series “Sasquatch”, which initially seemed like a typical supernatural investigation show but soon veered into something much more authentic and captivating. They’re carrying on this pattern with their new series, “Out There: Crimes of the Paranormal”, another project that might appear to be just another collection of eerie tales, but in reality, sheds light on very human events. In a way, “Out There” can be seen as a spiritual successor to “Sasquatch”, inviting viewers to explore even more unusual events. “Out There: Crimes of the Paranormal” is now available for streaming on Hulu.
Rof recounted how he, Mark, and the rest of their team on “Sasquatch” often discussed the recurring stories they encountered that shared similarities with the creature. He mused about the potential for telling more of these captivating tales, as they delved into various aspects of humanity, our challenges, injustices, and so forth. With this idea in mind, the team pushed forward with the project at Hulu, bringing on board Allie Orton as showrunner and an array of talented directors for each episode. They also assembled a fantastic research team to examine whether these stories held merit from both a humanitarian and paranormal perspective.
The filmmaker confessed that while the destination had always been the main focus, and the journey’s structure came afterward, he explained it this way: “Discovering those stories wasn’t a walk in the park, but we managed to find quite a few. I don’t think we planned out the premise first; instead, we hopped on board and let the story take us where it may.
Out There: Crimes Beyond Reality delves into eight authentic crime cases involving bizarre encounters with the supernatural realm. The series offers a blend of eyewitness testimonies, expert insights, and original investigations. In each case, the pursuit for explanations leads to a chilling suspicion – something otherworldly is at play. This in-depth exploration takes us to various towns and cities throughout North America, where we converse with individuals who have personal experiences and details about the extraordinary events that forever altered their lives. For instance, a six-year-old child vanishes mysteriously in the Smoky Mountains after being taken by an unknown ape-like creature. A UFO crash in Long Island triggers an assassination attempt and uncovers a vast political conspiracy. An occult group of Satanic witches is implicated in a longstanding New Jersey murder. Ghostly figures haunting San Francisco’s Chinatown threaten to claim the lives of the unmarried. In these tales and others, Out There follows fresh leads and discovers new evidence amidst a maze of unexpected twists and turns. Ultimately, these investigations reveal hidden truths – about the influence of mythology, the fascination with the supernatural, and the monsters lurking among us.
As a passionate admirer, I’d express it as follows: “I must admit, uncovering tantalizing hints of compelling narratives was surprisingly straightforward due to the abundance we had at hand. However, much like a funnel, they gradually narrowed down to the ones that ticked all our boxes. It’s crucial to acknowledge Allie and our directors for this, as when you consider a tale like ‘Sasquatch’, the central mystery lies in the crime: people mauled outside a Northern California weed farm, with all the money and weed left behind; was it Sasquatch or someone else trying to manipulate them by making it appear as if Sasquatch was responsible? It’s not our role to solve this enigma, but rather, to delve into it in the most intriguing way imaginable.
All episodes of Out There: Crimes of the Paranormal are now streaming on Hulu.
