As a long-time fan of One Piece, I can’t help but feel exhilarated about Joe Manganiello joining the cast for Season 2! The fact that he sees Crocodile as a “dark potential future” for Luffy has me intrigued and eager to see how this character will unfold in the live-action series.
In the lead-up to Season 2 of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece, Joe Manganiello has been brought on board as a cast member. His character, according to the actor, represents a possible ominous future for Monkey D. Luffy. Production for Season 2 of this series started earlier this year, and with each passing day, the talented roster keeps expanding as new faces make their debut in the upcoming story arcs inspired by Eiichiro Oda’s original manga. Manganiello was confirmed to be part of the cast during Netflix’s Geeked Week this year, and since then, he has shared details about the extensive research he’s undertaken regarding his character.
In an exclusive video shared by Netflix, showrunner Matt Owens interviewed Joe Manganiello who discussed joining the live-action adaptation of One Piece as Sir Crocodile. Manganiello detailed that he’s delved deep into his character research for the upcoming episodes. Speaking about his methodology, Manganiello shared that while studying all available material, he uncovered a distinctive perspective on the character. Referring to Crocodile’s defeat at the hands of Whitebeard, Manganiello described him as embodying a “grim possible future” for Luffy – one where he dwells in his failures rather than overcoming them.
Netflix’s One Piece: How Crocodile Is Like Luffy
I surround myself with multiple variations of Crocodile figures as I study this material. However, what truly matters to me is authenticity, especially when portraying a character some may label as a ‘villain.’ After all, he simply has unique motivations and a distinct journey compared to other characters. Interestingly, Manganiello also emphasized a potential bond between Crocodile and Luffy that fans might not have noticed over time.
As Manganiello explained, there’s an ominous parallel between Luffy and Crocodile. Crocodile might symbolize a troubling future for Luffy, should he succumb to the pain of defeat or allow it to fester like I did following Whitebeard. There seems to be within Crocodile a desire for others to endure suffering as he did, or to experience the disillusionment of not achieving pirate kingship and holding onto that resentment. Naturally, this includes distrust towards friends. In essence, Manganiello believes Luffy could follow in Crocodile’s footsteps if he chooses a darker path.
Who Is Crocodile?
In the realm of Eiichiro Oda’s captivating manga, One Piece, I find myself squaring off against a formidable adversary named Crocodile. This menacing character marks the first significant obstacle Luffy and the Straw Hats will encounter as we embark on our grand voyage across the Grand Line. The final moments of the first season left us hanging with the promise that this journey will officially commence, and it won’t be long before we uncover the harsh reality: the threats ahead are far more perilous than anything we’ve faced in East Blue. Crocodile serves as a stark reminder of this shift, leading the enigmatic Baroque Works organization.
Based on Manganiello’s perspective, it appears that the live-action series of “One Piece” will present a new aspect of this villain. His interpretation is expected to be quite distinct, adding to the anticipation for its release. However, at the time of this writing, there’s no announced release window or date for “One Piece” Season 2.
