As I read through this captivating narrative about Tia and Tamera Mowry, I can’t help but marvel at their resilience and adaptability over the years. With three decades of stardom under their belts, it’s clear that these two sisters have weathered the storms of fame and criticism with grace and fortitude.
Twins possess an extraordinary connection, serving as mirror images of one another. They represent halves of a single whole and often communicate in ways that baffle non-family members, sometimes not needing words at all.
Tia Mowry and Tamera Mowry-Housley can tell you all about it.
In a conversation on Larry King Now in 2014, Tamera stated, “There’s one thing we can’t experience – each other’s pain. If I pinch myself…” Tia, her younger sister by two minutes, added, “I might not feel your physical pain, but I know what she’s thinking at this moment. There’s nothing she can hide from me, and it works both ways.
In the interview, they often found themselves responding together, completing each other’s thoughts. This has become a familiar pattern.
10 years down the line, when Tia expressed in a trailer for the docuseries Tia Mowry: My Next Act, her regret about not being as close with Tamera as she once was, wishing she could simply pick up the phone and talk to her, but acknowledging that our current state of relationship isn’t conducive to that – this revelation set off a series of alarms within me.
As in, wait, why would she be wishing they were close? What happened?!
According to a trusted source, TopMob News learned that the difference in residence – with Tia living in Los Angeles and Tamera residing in Napa, California approximately 400 miles apart – symbolizes the physical gap between the two women.
According to the source, while the sisters are quite close emotionally, the statement being discussed is specifically about their geographical proximity.
It’s comforting to know that, despite growing up in front of the world as they portrayed adolescence on their popular 1990s sitcom Sister, Sister, it appears that they continue to be each other’s biggest supporters even as adults.
In 2022, Tamera expressed admiration to TopMob News, saying, “I’m genuinely impressed by her strength for standing firm in her authenticity and not shrinking from it,” she commended Tia, her slightly younger sister, after Tia filed for divorce from Cory Hardrict, her husband of 14 years, acknowledging her as a “very strong woman.
Despite no longer living at the same address or even sleeping in the same room, their lives have become busy and separate due to everyday circumstances. However, the strong connection they’ve shared from the very beginning is one that distance cannot weaken.
Tia and Tamera have been popular together for 30 years, starting from their rise to fame in the sitcom “Sister, Sister.” In this show, they portrayed twins who were separated at birth and later adopted. Specifically, “Tia Landry” was taken in by single mom Lisa (Jackée Harry) while “Tamera Campbell” lived with her widowed father Ray (Tim Reid), although the series began with Tamera being raised solely by him.
The twins, inspired by the TV show Star Search and their inability to advance on it as a dance act, decided to move from Texas with their parents and younger brother Tahj Mowry. At just 5 years old, Tahj had already secured a recurring role as Michelle Tanner’s friend Teddy on Full House.
Approximately two years following their debut in a Chrysler advertisement where they jumped rope playing Double Dutch, the young ladies were eventually spotted by producer Irene Dreayer.
They turned fifteen when “Sister, Sister” first aired on ABC, and it later moved to the WB the following year. The show ran for six seasons in total, so the twins were twenty-one when the series concluded.
“We basically grew up on that show,” Tia said.
Many ex-child or teen stars might concur about their initial fame-earning projects, but not everyone can claim their journey from childhood, particularly those who starred in a popular primetime show, was as seamless as that of the Mowry twins.
Despite encountering various private struggles and challenges, they skillfully navigated through situations that often lead to high-profile scandals for celebrities who found fame at a young age and struggled with adjusting when their limelight faded.
Initially, Tia and Tamera always had each other, meaning they never felt emotionally isolated. They grew up in a closely-knit family with mom Darlene and dad Timothy, who were high school sweethearts, served in the Army together, and brought up their four children in a religious environment. Their home was wherever the military assignment took them at any given time.
Growing up as a passionate admirer, let me share my story: Born in Germany, my family and I, thanks to our military-oriented parents’ postings, lived thrice in the enchanting lands of Hawaii and Texas before finally settling down in the glamorous L.A. This significant move was orchestrated to nurture our dreams. And guess what? The twins (Tia and Tamera) and I, we share a special bond with our adorable younger brothers Tahj and Tavior, who are as much a part of this incredible journey as we are.
Not that being a twin was, or is, always easy.
In the year 2014, on The Real, Tamera recalled being tagged at the age of 16 as the “funny, adorable one,” which was disappointing because she aspired to be seen as “sexy.
They fortunately didn’t need to deal with social media issues during their childhood, such as internet bullies, online shaming, regrettable posts, fluctuations in followers, and constant scrutiny, which they only had to face when they became adults.
Being a teen under public scrutiny wasn’t easy in the first place. Even someone from an older generation can’t say adolescence was a walk in the park. In fact, during their time, trolls would write letters on paper and send them through the mail.
Back in 2016 on The Real, Tamera shared a heartfelt revelation. She used to read and respond personally to all our fans’ letters because she appreciated them that much. They’d sign autographs, too, not using pre-made ones.
It wasn’t only Tia who objected to that train of thought.
Tamera, my dear friend shared, ‘Hey, Tamera! Remember, you’re no longer a teenager. It’s time to silence the doubt within you. Don’t let others dictate your identity.'” Tamera then responded.
Whenever I encounter criticism similar to that, my response is simple: I don’t feel compelled to endorse such views. Your opinions, coming from someone I don’t personally know, won’t dictate or influence my self-perception. I am the one who determines who I am, not you.
In addition to her encounters with bullies on social media platforms, Tia publicly shared her experiences in 2015 on HuffPost Live. This came shortly after discovering that individuals commenting on her Instagram posts were falsely assuming she was pregnant, a claim which was untrue for her at the time.
Tia mentioned, “I’m savoring life and if I decide to shed some pounds later on, I will, but for now, I’m content with who I am.” At the time, her son Cree was 4 years old. She was surprised by a comment she received on her Instagram today: “‘You seem to have gained some weight, I hope you lose it.’ It’s just astounding! Why would someone say such a thing? What motivates them to make such comments?
In 2017, Tia revealed how deeply personal online body-shaming can be for her. During her teenage years while filming Sister, Sister, she resorted to taking diet pills as a means to resist the constant temptation of sweets and unhealthy snacks that surrounded the young actors on set daily.
In her 2017 cookbook titled “Whole New You: How Real Food Transforms Your Life, for a Healthier, More Gorgeous You“, she wrote about an experience where the pressure of television and the desire to appear attractive overshadowed how she felt about her body. She admitted that she is not proud of it, as she lost weight but at a cost – the pills she took made her heart race, and deep down she knew she was causing herself harm.
Tia took the pills up until her time in college. She penned this, until a professor proposed she figuratively burn away a harmful practice by setting fire to it.
In the heat of my obsession with self-improvement, I scribbled “Abandon diet pills” on a slip of paper and sent it up in flames within my fireplace. As I watched the parchment dance and dissolve, something within me snapped free. Not once have I reached for those pills since that fateful day, and I’m thankful to say I haven’t yearned for them either.
Additionally, it came to light that Tia had been diagnosed with endometriosis during her twenties, an experience that inspired her to make significant changes to her diet by adopting a healthier eating habit.
In the year 2001, she encountered her future spouse, Cory, on the set of an independent film titled “Hollywood Horror”. They became engaged on Christmas Day in 2006 and exchanged vows on the 20th of April, 2008.
Back in 2011, when I was just a blip on the radar, my beloved Tia shared an old clip from their show, “Tia & Tamera,” where she was discussing the idea of sampling her breast milk. Fast forward to 2018, and the world met my precious daughter, Cairo.
Tia mentioned irreconcilable issues as the cause behind seeking a divorce in her October 2022 application. Tamera might have had an advantageous position, but on the TODAY show she stated that she would honor her sister’s desire to keep her decision-making process private for now.
“I support her,” Tamera said. “So whatever she wants, the Mowrys have her back.”
In the year 2005, Tamera got acquainted with Adam Housley, who was once a correspondent for Fox News at that time. Except for a brief separation of approximately one year, they’ve been a pair since then. They tied the knot on May 15, 2011, and it was later disclosed by Tamera that they chose to wait until after their marriage before engaging in any intimate relationship.
If you prefer to live a celibate life, it’s best not to cohabit as it can make things more challenging for you,” she said with a chuckle in 2012 to Ebony. “It’s important to have people around you to keep you on track! Surround yourself with individuals who will hold you accountable and support your choice, as they’ll only encourage you.
Son Aiden was born in 2012, followed by daughter Ariah in 2015.
Although trolls ceased writing letters, a few surfaced on social media to comment about Tamera marrying a Caucasian man. In 2014, she told Larry King, “Now I find it amusing because quite frankly, it’s their problem, not mine.” (Coincidentally, the Mowrys’ father is white and their mother is African American.)
But the commentary never got much kinder.
In an appearance on The Real in 2017, Tamera recalled the initial negative comments when she and her partner first went public 12 years prior, such as “I didn’t think she’d be with him!”. However, she admitted that she wasn’t prepared for the level of criticism she faced as she grew older.
She went on to say, “I believe the criticism has grown more severe due to the current racial and political environment. However, my wonderful husband pointed out something insightful: ‘Remember, Tamera, this situation is teaching you to concentrate on the multitude of people who support you, rather than the small group that opposes you.’ And he’s absolutely correct.
It appears over the last three decades, I’ve noticed an overwhelming support for Tia and Tamera rather than criticism.
Initially, they paused their acting careers to earn bachelor’s degrees in psychology from Pepperdine University, located in Malibu, California. However, they didn’t stop collaborating altogether, appearing together in cable films such as “Twitches”, “Twitches Too” and “Seventeen Again”. Meanwhile, Tamera portrayed a doctor on the Lifetime series “Strong Medicine”, while Tia featured in “The Game”, playing a medical student who temporarily abandoned her aspirations to move with her football player boyfriend across the country. Later, Tia took on the role in the TV Land sitcom “Instant Mom”.
For several years, they collaborated once more for the reality show “Tia & Tamera”. After this, Tamera served as a co-host on “The Real” from 2013 to 2020. Meanwhile, Tia continued her career in TV and film, including holiday movies like “A Gingerbread Romance”, which was released in 2018.
As a devoted follower, I proudly share that I admire my two sisters, each excelling in distinct yet complementary fields. While Tia captivates audiences on her YouTube channel, Tia Mowry’s Quick Fix, by sharing innovative life hacks, Tamera, along with her husband, has embarked on a different journey – the opening of Barnhouse Napa Brews. This charming establishment is nestled just steps away from our family’s esteemed winery, Century Oak, in the heart of Napa Valley.
To celebrate their 13th wedding anniversary with Adam in May, Tamera expressed her feelings by penning, “Time has truly flown, and I often remark, ‘You’ll encounter highs and lows.’ Our marriage isn’t flawless, but I continue to appreciate him. I admire his character as a person. Remarkably, we’re growing closer rather than drifting apart.
As I prepare for the October 4th debut of my WEtv series, “Tia Mowry: My Next Act”, I found myself in beautiful Jamaica, taking a moment to recollect myself, as I shared on Instagram, “Stepping into this new chapter of life, I’m learning to appreciate the significance of rejuvenation and finding tranquility.” In this transitional phase, I’ve been candidly sharing insights about my current single status.
On September 8th, she shared: “This is a state of JOY for me. Abstaining from romantic relationships, taking care of myself through good nutrition, regular meditation and prayer, hydration, focusing on my own affairs, ensuring quality sleep, engrossing myself in books, setting boundaries, searching for like-minded individuals, and maintaining beautiful curls, thanks to my personal hair care line, 4U By Tia.
Tamera agreed that Tia is currently living her own life, as Tia is being true to herself, mentioning during an interview with Entertainment Tonight on a recent red carpet that she hasn’t received an invitation for the new TV series.
“No, she’s like, ‘This is my story,'” Tamera explained, “and, you know, I can only respect that.”
In my expert opinion, Tia doesn’t have to go out of her way to clarify her thoughts. After all, when it comes to mutual understanding, there’s no one quite like Tamera.
