Assassin’s Creed Shadows Gets Delayed

Assassin's Creed Shadows Gets Delayed

As a seasoned Assassin’s Creed fan with countless hours spent navigating the hidden realms of history and slaying Templars, I must admit, I was quite excited for the anticipated Japanese spin-off, Assassin’s Creed Shadows. However, the recent delay until February 2025 has left me a bit disheartened, especially given the rarity of an Assassin’s Creed release-less year.

Ubisoft has postponed the release of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” from its initial November date, and it will now be available on February 14, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms. This shift in schedule comes after the cancellation of an Assassin’s Creed event that was planned during Tokyo Game Show, as well as ongoing discussions about the game’s representation of Yasuke, one of the two main playable characters.

In the recent Ubisoft financial conference call, it was disclosed that the release of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” has been postponed. This information was also communicated through a post on social media platforms to verify the delay.

It’s unusual for there not to be a significant Assassin’s Creed game release in a year, but the postponement of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” from 2024 means that Ubisoft is having an atypical year without an Assassin’s Creed game.

Fans of Assassin’s Creed have been eagerly anticipating a Japan-set installment in the series, with popular games like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Ghost of Tsushima fueling this desire. However, upon the announcement of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Ubisoft has faced some opposition. While some critics seemed to dislike the female shinobi characters named Naoe or Yasuke, others (particularly within the Japanese community) were disappointed that Ubisoft opted not to choose an Asian male as the protagonist for this potentially once-in-a-lifetime Japanese Assassin’s Creed game. They felt that Ubisoft missed an opportunity by not creating either an original or historically accurate Asian male character for the lead role.

Skip past the grumbles until we reach September, when Tokyo Game Show rolled around. It wasn’t overlooked that Ubisoft opted to cancel their presentation of Assassin’s Creed Shadows originally scheduled for the event. Some speculated this was Ubisoft choosing to avoid further criticism during the showcase of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, but given recent developments, it appears the delay in release was also a significant factor.

The much-anticipated game “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” is set to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and personal computer platforms on Valentine’s Day, February 14th.
