Ricochet Would've Never Joined WWE If AEW Was Born One Year Earlier

As a fan who’s been following the wrestling scene for years, I can’t help but feel a sense of satisfaction seeing Ricochet finally joining All Elite Wrestling (AEW). His high-flying antics and innovative style have always been a joy to watch, and his move to AEW feels like a long-awaited homecoming.

Ricochet is #AllElite. The innovative high-flyer officially joined All Elite Wrestling this past August at AEW ALL IN: London, debuting as a surprise entrant in the Wembley Stadium show’s Casino Gauntlet Match. Ricochet had been linked to AEW for multiple months leading up to his debut, with theories first bubbling about him jumping ship after Will Ospreay called out his former rival to “bet on himself” when his WWE contract expired. Less than one week after those comments were made, Ricochet gave his notice to WWE, slowly detaching himself from his employer of the past six years in order to enter free agency upon his deal coming to an end.

If Tony Khan had started working with AEW a year sooner, Ricochet might have been among the initial group of performers when the company first launched.

When asked about potential plans for AEW back in January 2018, I definitely would have chosen that path without a doubt, as I shared during my conversation on “Talk is Jericho.

In April 2018, Ricochet first appeared on television during NXT Takeover: New Orleans. This marked the beginning of a one-year engagement for Ricochet with the NXT brand, which is known as the black and gold developmental brand. Eventually, in early 2019, he was gradually introduced to the main roster.

During his final free agency period in late 2017, Ricochet recalled the immense attraction of NXT. “At that time,” he said, “the black-and-gold brand was thriving. They had matches like Cesaro against Sami Zayn, Sami Zayn versus Shinsuke Nakamura. Plus, there were stars like Finn Balor and Kevin Owens. All of them were performing exceptionally well. Moreover, there was the Undisputed Era, which I was part of, and Aleister Black was also present.

Ricochet held a similar perspective as the leading figures in his NXT group, including Adam Cole, Tommaso Ciampa, and Johnny Gargano; they all viewed NXT as their ultimate goal rather than a transitional phase. However, it was only a year after his NXT debut that he found himself on WWE Monday Night Raw, making his time in NXT comparatively shorter than many of his contemporaries.

Ricochet stated, ‘I felt most at home there, it was the one spot I truly desired to stay. I had no interest in Raw or SmackDown. I yearned for NXT. My tenure was roughly nine months before we were promoted to Raw.’

On Wednesday, October 2nd, Ricochet will contest for the AEW International Title against Will Ospreay during the fifth anniversary of AEW Dynamite.
