The Office star struggled to “break habit” after leaving comedy series

As a movie buff with a penchant for behind-the-scenes tales, I can’t help but be captivated by the anecdotes that emerge from the world of cinema. Amy Ryan, the talented actress who brought Holly Flax to life in The Office, has shared one such story that resonates deeply with me.

I’ve observed that even more than a decade since the last episode was broadcast, the American version of The Office continues to resonate with people worldwide. It seems to have made a lasting impact on countless fans like myself.

But it also had a major impact on one of its stars.

In my opinion, during her tenure on the comedy show, there was indeed one particular quirk of hers that persisted and seemed difficult for her to let go.

After completing work on that particular show, it took some time before I worked on other movies and series, during which I occasionally found myself unintentionally looking towards the camera.

“Then I’d be like, ‘Oh, right, you’re really only allowed to do that on The Office.’”

In a specific high-profile production, it was particularly challenging for the Oscar nominee to avoid unintentionally acknowledging the audience or breaking the illusion of the story.

I recall an incident from the movie ‘Green Zone’ by Paul Greengrass, and it was rather awkward. As a result, I made a conscious effort to stop engaging in that behavior.

In the end, this minor hurdle seemed insignificant to Ryan, as he thoroughly enjoyed his role as HR manager Holly in the sitcom, where he portrayed the quirky love interest of Steve Carell’s character, Michael Scott, for four exciting seasons.

Working with Carell posed its own challenges, however.

Regardless of the number of episodes I worked alongside Steve Carell, it proved quite challenging to maintain a serious expression,” she clarified.

He’s incredibly humorous. Fortunately, we always had two recording devices; one would quietly shut down whenever I began to chuckle.

“I’d be holding my breath, laughing, and you’d see my shaking shoulders on the other side of it.”

Ryan shares screen time with two renowned actors from Tinseltown in the movie “Wolfs”. This film revolves around the lives of two ‘clean-up specialists’, portrayed by none other than Brad Pitt and George Clooney.

On Friday, the 27th of September, Ryan hinted that the audience will be treated to a harmonious beat from the duo, promising a visually pleasing “rhythm” on screen.

On Apple TV+, the highly-anticipated series “Wolfs” will be premiering this coming Friday, 27th September 2024. If you’d rather catch up on some office humor, feel free to stream “The Office” on Netflix.
