The Wives ending explained: What happened to Annabelle?

As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of watching suspenseful dramas under my belt, I must admit that Channel 5’s The Wives left me utterly captivated from start to finish. This six-episode series took me on an emotional rollercoaster ride, leaving me questioning every character and their motives until the very end.

In the television series “The Wives” on Channel 5, the lives of the Morgan family were dramatically altered as Annabelle (played by Christine Bottomley), while vacationing in Malta, appeared to have perished after falling off a cliff, leaving behind her husband Charlie and their daughter, Sky.

Approximately a year passed, and Annabelle’s sisters-in-law, Beth (Jo Joyner), Natasha (Angela Griffin), and Sylvie (Tamzin Outhwaite), along with their respective partners, made a return to Malta. During this visit, they found that Charlie (Jamie Bamber) had formed a new relationship with Jade (Katie Clarkson-Hill), a young yoga instructor, who bears an uncanny resemblance to his previous spouse.

Beth quickly picks up that something isn’t quite right, given her shock over Annabelle’s presumed demise since no body was ever discovered. As it turns out, Beth’s instincts were correct, and throughout the six episodes, she, along with the other girls, embark on an adventure to uncover the truth.

However, could you clarify precisely what transpired with Annabelle, and most significantly, are there any other hidden secrets that her closet may be concealing?

In summary, here’s a recap of events from Episode 6 of “The Wives” as the captivating storyline unfolded under the warm rays of Channel 5:

What happened to Annabelle in The Wives?

It turns out that, as people had speculated, Annabelle didn’t pass away the previous year. Instead, she chose to conceal herself following a disturbing incident: local resident Luca (Louis Boyer), who was Sylvie’s summer romance, was allegedly paid to carry out an assassination on her.

On the contrary, she chose not to confront her husband or family, but rather paid off Luca, staged her own death, and went into hiding. In reality, she was communicating with her daughter Sky online, using the alias OceanMagic22, as Luca had threatened to harm her daughter if she spoke up.

She finally re-emerges just in time to save the Morgan wives, who have been cornered by Luca at gunpoint, demanding the return of a bag full of casino chips he had asked Natasha to look after.

As soon as it appears Luca is about to fire, Annabelle surprises him by hitting him with a car, thus proving she’s still alive to the Wives at the crucial moment. In this instance, she also encounters her successor, Jade, for the first time. With Luca tucked away in the back of the car, they all head back to their respective apartments.

As the journey continues, additional facts emerge when Beth challenges Annabelle regarding the possibility of her having an affair with Beth’s husband and Charlie’s brother, Frankie (Ben Willbond). Annabelle doesn’t refute the allegation, and eventually Frankie confesses, pleading with her not to abandon him.

But trouble is only just beginning when they realise Luca is missing.

As Sylvie and Natasha chase after the thug, believing he wouldn’t have traveled too far, Sean (Jonathan Forces) heads off to inform his siblings that Annabelle is still alive. Meanwhile, Beth accompanies Annabelle to the authorities to share the details of the recent events.

When Sean informs Charlie about Annabelle, he makes up his mind to escape, joining Sky and Jade en route to the harbor to elude Maltese authorities and leave the country. Now cognizant of his brother’s actions, Frankie alerts Beth about Charlie’s destination, prompting her to follow suit along with the police.

Arriving at the right moment, they made it clear they’d open fire if he stepped onto the boat. In a nerve-wracking standoff, Beth successfully communicated with him, causing Charlie to surrender to the authorities. As a result, Sky was finally able to embrace her mother, who she had believed passed away.

What were the brothers up to?

The close-knit trio consisting of Frankie, Charlie, and Sean (alongside Tom, Sylvie’s former spouse who didn’t join this year’s journey) mirrors the bond between their spouses, and a series of secrets emerged among them throughout the series.

Initially, it turned out that Charlie, who was believed to be a mourning widower, had actually been involved romantically with Jade for over a year. On the very night Annabelle passed away, he was with her. Furthermore, he was also seeing Sylvie, which is quite intriguing as both women were part of his family circle.

In a past secret liaison, I was involved with Annabelle, which unfortunately took place while I was still married. It’s strongly suggested that I am Sky’s true father, given that my friend Charlie struggles with fertility issues.

Sean and his spouse Natasha concealed their financial hardships from others, leading them to discreetly relocate to the Maltese apartments.

What happens next?

A couple of weeks pass, and the family finds itself in disarray. Frankie pays a visit to Charlie in jail, where he appears utterly shattered.

After that, he desperately tries to mend fences with Beth, but unfortunately, this effort falls through. Eventually, he encounters Luca, and it turns out that he had been the one who had hired Luca to assassinate Annabelle as a way to conceal his infidelity.

He instructs Luca to ‘finish the job he paid him to do and then leave Malta for good’.

At their last gathering, which was hosted by Sky, Annabelle playfully taunts Beth. In response, an irritated Beth pushes Annabelle into the pool, mirroring the action she took against Jade during the initial episode. This incident recalls her earlier behavior.
