Joker: Folie à Deux Director Reveals Totally Unexpected Reaction Arthur Would Have to Batman

As a die-hard fan of the DC Universe with a soft spot for the darker, more complex tales, I eagerly await the release of “Joker: Folie à Deux”. Having grown up watching the Joker’s chaotic dance through Gotham City, it’s fascinating to see Arthur Fleck’s journey continue in this unique sequel.

Upcoming movie “Joker: Folie à Deux” is set to hit theaters, continuing the story of Arthur Fleck/Joker (played by Joaquin Phoenix). The Joker films share an intriguing link with the broader DC universe, as characters like Harvey Dent (portrayed by Harry Lawtey), who’s famously known as Two-Face in comics, make appearances. However, Batman himself has had limited involvement, only making a fleeting appearance of a young Bruce Wayne (Dante Pereira-Olson) in the first film. In a recent interview with IGN, director Todd Phillips hinted at how Arthur might respond to a fully-fledged Batman.

Phillips stated, “I believe Arthur would be astonished by Batman’s alpha male presence. I truly feel so. I think Arthur admired and respected it.” He continued, “I believe he’d find him awe-inspiring. I think Arthur was always drawn to men who exuded an air of comfort, and Batman is not one of those men. Murray Franklin in the movie was a man at ease. I suspect that the people Arthur worked with seemed easygoing to him, and that was something Arthur himself never could achieve.

What Is Joker 2 About?

In the movie “Joker: Folie ? Deux,” Arthur Fleck is confined at Arkham Asylum, awaiting trial for his actions as The Joker. Balancing his two personas, Arthur encounters genuine affection and uncovers a hidden musical talent within himself. The film boasts the performances of Oscar-nominated actors Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener, along with Zazie Beetz, reprising her role from “Joker.

Previously, Beetz expressed her agreement with the film’s musical aspects, stating, “It truly resonates with me.” She continued by sharing that she was not surprised by Todd Phillips’ creative approach to the character, as she appreciates musicals for their ability to portray characters’ deep emotions and experiences. Beetz further explained that for her, singing and dancing serve as a form of emotional release, especially during challenging times in her life. She recalled an instance when she found solace in dancing and crying alone, which mirrored the feelings and experiences of the character Arthur (the Joker). Thus, she can understand why he would express himself through song and dance.

Is Joker 2 in the DC Universe?

The movie titled “Folie à Deux” falls under the category of a DC Elseworlds production, which means it doesn’t belong to James Gunn and Peter Safran’s upcoming DC Universe of films and television shows on Max. In a previous post on Threads, Gunn mentioned his role in “Folie à Deux”, stating that he provided feedback on the completed footage. However, it’s worth noting that Gunn highlighted that the Joker sequel is among the few forthcoming DC movies being overseen by Warner Bros. Pictures, considering when the film was initially developed.

Joker: Folie ? Deux will be released exclusively in theaters on Friday, October 4th.
