As a long-time wrestling enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of the industry from its humble beginnings to the grand spectacle it is today, I must say that the recent retirement of the FTW Championship by Hook was a poignant moment that brought a tear to my eye. The history behind this title, created by the legendary Taz, adds an extra layer of sentimentality that resonates with fans like me who have been there since its inception.
The AEW Grand Slam kicked off with high energy, as the AEW World Championship was at stake, but there were other prizes up for grabs too. The second match of the evening was for the FTW Championship, with Hook defending against Roderick Strong. As anticipated, they put on a fantastic performance in the ring. What surprised many, though, was what occurred after Hook retained his title. First, Strong showed respect by shaking Hook’s hand following his loss, and then Hook made a shocking announcement: he was retiring the FTW Championship, giving the title to his father, Taz.
Retiring The Title

Following his victory, Hook addressed Tony Schiavone, who mentioned that the title was originally established by Taz in 1998, just three miles from tonight’s defense. Hook acknowledged Tony but then stated that every great thing eventually concludes.
What’s Next For Hook?
With his previous title no longer active, it’s unclear what Hook will choose to do next, but he certainly has opportunities to join other AEW productions. In the singles competition, there are several titles up for grabs including the AEW World Championship, AEW International Championship, AEW Continental Championship, and TNT Championship. Among these, Hook seems to be a strong contender for either the TNT Champion Jack Perry or the Continental Champion Kazuchika Okada. Given his popularity among fans, he would fit well as a rival for The Elite if he challenges either of them. While it’s uncertain whether Hook will face Perry and become the new TNT Champion, such a scenario could prove to be quite exciting.
FTW Championship History
Back in 1998, I was fortunate to be part of history as Taz became the inaugural FTW Champion. He ruled for an impressive 219 days before getting dethroned by Sabu. The FTW Championship saw a hiatus until 2020, with Brian Cage claiming it for a record-breaking 377 days in AEW. Ricky Starks followed suit, holding the Title for 378 days, and then came the era of Hook, who reigned from July 27th, 2022 to July 19th, 2023, totalling 357 days. Jack Perry briefly stole the glory, but Hook regained his Title and held it for another 238 days. Chris Jericho then stepped into the ring as FTW Champion for 126 days before Hook knocked him down and reclaimed the Title once more.
