As a long-time Marvel enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of these characters since their comic book debuts, I must say that Agatha All Along has certainly piqued my interest. The twist in this series is nothing short of brilliant, and it’s clear that Agatha Harkness’ motivations go far beyond mere power-hunger.
In the initial two instalments of “Agatha All Along”, Marvel enthusiasts reconnected with Kathryn Hahn’s character, Agatha Harkness. Following three years imprisoned by a spell cast by Wanda Maximoff at the end of WandaVision, Agatha manages to break free and discovers her powers are gone. To regain her magical abilities, she assembles a coven consisting of a peculiar Teen (Joe Locke) and an assortment of witches to navigate the trials of the famed Witches’ Road. However, it is possible that for Agatha, this treacherous path doesn’t aim at reclaiming power; instead, it could be a means to fulfill another purpose. The much-maligned witch might have hidden intentions for embarking on this perilous journey, and her true objectives may alter everything we thought we knew.

In episodes “Seekest Thou the Road” and “Circle Seen as Woven by Destiny/Unveil Thy Concealed Doorway” of Agatha All Alone, we learn some interesting facts about Agatha’s character. For one, we discover how Agatha acquires her magical abilities. In the initial episode, when Agatha is powerless and confronting Rio Vidal (played by Aubrey Plaza), who intends to kill Agatha after she’s freed from Wanda’s spell, Agatha hints that Rio doesn’t wish to kill her when she’s weak. Rio proposes that Agatha should take her power instead, making the act more gratifying. Agatha declines and Rio agrees to wait until Agatha regains her powers. However, in the second episode, we learn more about Agatha’s abilities as she explains to Lilia Calderu (Patti LuPone) that she can only absorb the powers of other witches if they blast her with their magic. This knowledge proves useful later when the coven attempts to open the gate to the Road and initially fail. Agatha anticipates the enraged witches to blast her, enabling her to steal their powers. They refuse, Agatha’s manipulation fails, but the gate to the Road miraculously appears, and they proceed onward.
If Agatha can acquire power by making another witch angry enough to attack with their powers, then it raises doubts about whether Agatha truly relies on the Witches’ Road for her power. While it might be thought that the witches she encounters are cautious due to their awareness of Agatha and her schemes, there’s still a possibility, however slim, that one could attack her. Moreover, considering Agatha’s past actions like draining power from other witches during the Salem trials in 1693, it seems she might find ways to obtain short-term magic until she can secure more power independently, suggesting that she’s not following the Witches’ Road for power.
Agatha yearns for something different, and hints can be found in the first episode and today’s third episode titled “Through Many Miles of Tricks and Trials.
In the initial episode, the audience encounters a room within Wanda’s enchanted dwelling that appears unused, hinting at a missing child. Inside this room lies a trophy bearing the name “Nicholas Scratch,” which is significant to Marvel Comics fans as Agatha’s son’s name. The sorrowful demeanor of Agatha in this space, coupled with her anxious reaction to the possibility that the intruder might have taken something from it, implies a sense of loss.
Agatha has the ability to wield power, as demonstrated by her past actions, and she may very well do so again without requiring the Road for that power. However, there’s something unique about her child’s life – it seems to be attainable only through a profound mystical ritual or act of magic, like walking the Road. If Agatha is embarking on this journey to retrieve her son in WandaVision, it brings her actions into alignment with those of Wanda Maximoff, revealing that they might not be so dissimilar after all.
If Agatha and Wanda are two women deeply mourning, resorting to powerful magic as a means of healing their emotional wounds, it significantly alters our understanding of them both… implying that neither may truly fit the villain archetype. In fact, who among us wouldn’t summon chaos for the sake of protecting our children?
