In the final episode of the season, Lucy ended up being detained for the killing of police IT specialist Holly. The previous night, Holly had messaged Lucy stating that she had crucial details to disclose and requested a visit to her residence.

It appeared quite plausible that the news indicated James, Lucy’s spouse, might have been involved in an affair with Holly, since our earlier findings suggested as much.

Following a disturbance that neighbors overheard, it was discovered that Lucy was in her apartment with a knife, while Holly was sadly discovered unconscious outside.

All evidence pointed to Lucy, but the team couldn’t establish a motive – that is, until Simon revealed that he had overheard Holly speaking with John (who she believed to be James) talking about their affair.

In a formal police interview, I found myself facing off against John, who was questioned about his intimate past with Holly. With the noose tightening around him, John ultimately confessed, admitting that he wasn’t James – leaving him uncertain if James and Holly had ever been romantically entangled.

Initially, Russell and his colleagues found it tough to handle the act of deception, while John spent the night in confinement.

Yet, it became apparent that they couldn’t unravel the enigma surrounding Holly’s demise without his involvement, so they granted him a last opportunity to probe and protect Lucy.

In a bid to safeguard her own career and that of her team, Carol made John put his signature on James’s resignation papers. This gave the impression that James was still employed until then, masking John’s own misdeeds which were later erased from view.

What happened to Holly and was Lucy guilty?

In the course of his inquiries, it was found out that Lucy happened to be in a harmful situation, as she was at the wrong location during the wrong moment. The unfortunate event was that Holly was murdered by Adam, whom Lucy had hired for her actual line of work.

In this context, her activities consisted of gathering and trading data or knowledge. While serving in the police force, she maintained a watchful eye on all the officers and sold information to the highest bidder.

She leaked information about individuals being investigated, blackmailed police officers by using their emails, and sold news articles to the press, all while having unauthorized access to their correspondence. (29 words)

Holly wasn’t involved in an affair with James; instead, she discovered the truth about John pretending to be him, which led her to suspect this scenario. Her intention when reaching out to Lucy was to threaten her with this revelation as a form of extortion.

In the world of cinema, I found myself in a bitter predicament. Holly, my supposed partner, had been deceiving me all along, skimming off a larger share of our film profits than our agreed-upon 50/50 split. Upon this revelation, I felt betrayed and acted in haste, ending her involvement before she could swindle any more from me.

Carol explained to John that Holly had sold information to former journalist, blogger and conspiracy theorist Roger Sinclair. They didn’t know what information she sold, and all of Sinclair’s articles had been scrubbed from the internet.

Upon Sinclair’s demise, James arrived as the earliest responder. However, despite this initial involvement, a specialized team was promptly summoned, resulting in James and his partner Matt being removed from the investigation.

The revised crime scene report, made by the new team, was later discovered to be false by James, as he had personally witnessed evidence suggesting that Sinclair had been the target of a well-executed assassination.

The possessions from Sinclair’s residence mysteriously vanished – they were packed away and shipped to Scotland Yard, yet the vehicle carrying them was found to be vacant upon arrival. Carol advised James to halt his investigation, recognizing that he was in over his head.

Following this event, I decided to step away from my work life and lay low, while James vanished, asking Lucy to tender his resignation for him.

Following his departure from the police station where he signed James’s resignation papers, John received a voicemail message from James. In this message, James expressed surprise at John’s choice to impersonate him, stating that he had delved deeply into the Sinclair case solely as a means of escaping the turmoil in his personal life.

He told John he was like their father, who had abandoned them, and that his disappearance was nothing more than what it seemed – he had left Lucy and their son Henry.

John clarified things to Lucy, but later on, he discovered – “James wasn’t being honest; instead, he was concealing a message.” He had employed a symbolic reference – likening himself to the bowerbird, which James wouldn’t typically do. He was guiding them towards a book of birds that he had given to Henry, using it to create his code.

They were guided to a storage facility where they uncovered the belongings of Sinclair’s home, secretly stored. John speculated that one of the theories about conspiracies Sinclair had been investigating might have remarkably proven true, and valuable enough for someone to murder him. The group began their search for it, while James kept vigil from the shadows.

Here’s what we’ve discovered so far regarding his disappearance, but I’m optimistic that we’ll uncover additional insights should the series get renewed for another season.

Where did we leave John?

Towards the conclusion of the season, John opted to remain in Cambridge to aid Lucy and Henry in sorting through Sinclair’s work, with the intention of reuniting James with us.

Additionally, he accepted Russell’s proposal to join their detective squad as a crime consultant, and most recently, he was spotted working alongside them on a fresh homicide case. Here’s looking forward to more exciting cases in upcoming seasons.
