As a researcher who has spent countless hours immersed in the digital landscapes of StarCraft, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming release of both StarCraft Remastered and StarCraft 2 on PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. The Koprulu Sector has been a second home for many gamers, myself included, and returning to it is like reuniting with an old friend you’ve missed dearly.
Players can return to the Koprulu Sector and the world of rock-paper-scissors strategy soon.
At the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2024, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer announced that StarCraft Remastered and StarCraft 2 will be available on PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate starting November 5, 2024. The StarCraft series focuses on the conflicts between three distinct factions: the human Terrans, the insatiable Zerg, and the highly-evolved Protoss.
With StarCraft 2’s multiplayer being free, the Game Pass release offers access to the campaign bundle, enabling players to journey through the entire sci-fi narrative.
In October 2023, Microsoft completed its purchase of Activision Blizzard, and during the ensuing months, several games from this company were added to the Xbox Game Pass catalog. This includes Diablo 4, a game by Blizzard Entertainment, as well as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 from Activision.
StarCraft is an iconic piece of Blizzard history
Even though it’s been some time since a fresh StarCraft game was released, this series remains deeply ingrained in the history of Blizzard Entertainment, and it’s one of the most iconic real-time strategy (RTS) franchise titles out there.
Following the successor to one of the most legendary real-time strategy (RTS) games, StarCraft 2, was divided into three separate releases: Wings of Liberty, launched in 2010, focused on the Terran campaign; Heart of the Swarm, released in 2013, centered around the Zerg storyline; and Legacy of the Void, which wrapped up the narrative with the Protoss saga in 2015. Meanwhile, StarCraft Remastered is an updated version of the original game, equipped to run on modern graphics systems, initially released in 2017.
By the year 2009, the initial game and its expansion pack, Brood War, had collectively sold more than 11 million copies. In contrast, each of StarCraft 2’s three separate campaign releases managed to surpass a million sales within just 48 hours of their launch. The StarCraft franchise reached a revenue milestone of $1 billion as early as 2017.
Currently, it remains uncertain what the future has in store for StarCraft. However, as an increasing number of gamers engage in these two titles, we’ll observe whether there are further developments waiting for us down the line.
