As a self-proclaimed fan, immersed in the enchanting world of entertainment, I wholeheartedly endorse adding “All Creatures Great and Small” to your watchlist. Picture this: my living room, a cozy haven adorned with bookshelves that house graphic novels, actual novels, and a record player playing the melodious tunes of Dexys Midnight Runners. The remote control, a prized possession in my household, is always within arm’s reach, ready to be manipulated by yours truly.
Add All Creatures Great and Small to your watchlist
What is the view from your sofa?
Beneath the television, there are bookshelves on both sides. On one side, you’ll find graphic novels and novels separated by a figurine of Dr Doom from Marvel comics. The other side has a record player and a DVD of Dexys Midnight Runners’ concert at the Duke of York’s Theatre, my favorite band. In front of that stands Tristan’s veterinary bag from “All Creatures Great and Small”.
Who controls the remote in your household?
I’m the one in charge of managing our entertainment setup since we have three different remotes – one for the TV, another for the Firestick, and a third for the soundbar. My girlfriend often asks me to handle it more efficiently, but by then, I’ve already decided on what we’ll be watching.
What have you enjoyed recently?
As a die-hard Star Wars fan, I couldn’t help but be drawn to “The Acolyte” despite its less than stellar reviews. To me, anything set within the expansive Star Wars galaxy is a must-watch, even if it’s eight hours of paint drying!
If even paint drying is watchable, what are your TV turn-offs?
Among the things I dislike, Bridgerton stands out as one of the most disappointing series. Yet, given the chance to join its cast, I’d gladly do so, since that would grant me freedom to select any role I prefer.
Have you ever auditioned for Star Wars?
No, that’s my dream. If I got to wield a lightsaber on TV or film, I could die the next day a happy man.
Were your parents supportive when you told them you wanted to act?
In simpler terms,
After finishing your time at drama school, you immediately landed a role in The Durrells. Later, you were chosen for All Creatures – does this mean you’ve had a lifelong passion for animals?
It’s quite surprising. At drama school, I was cast in darker roles such as Hotspur in Henry IV and Stanhope in Journey’s End… then I landed Leslie in The Durrells! I had hoped to perform well and return to villainous characters, but I’ve continued with the pleasant, heartwarming family drama instead. However, I have also dabbled in horror films on the side, as I am a fan of that genre.
This season Tristan is back from the war. How was his homecoming?
In the third series finale, Siegfried [Samuel West] and Tristan shared an emotional farewell that added depth to their relationship, yet surprisingly, it wasn’t long before they were back to squabbling like a pair of long-married folks. It’s this dynamic that makes their chemistry so intriguing. I must admit, I was thrilled to share the screen with Jamie Rose as Carmody in series four; his performance was captivating. Our upcoming episode has an edge reminiscent of ‘Breaking Bad’, making it a truly exciting piece to be a part of.
Breaking Bad is quite a departure from the Yorkshire Dales!
Essentially, it’s still James Herriot’s world on set, especially during our filming in Grassington, standing in for Darrowby. The love for the show is palpable, as there’s always an eager audience when we’re shooting. It’s a unique blend of television and theater – 200 people watch us at work, and when we wrap a scene, they cheer with applause.
Are you working on something darker right now?
Instead of working solely as an actor, I’ve also taken up part-time gardening to keep my days organized during periods between acting jobs. A mutual acquaintance was previously maintaining my garden while I was preparing for a horror film, where I needed to look thin. To help with that, I decided to assist and ended up enjoying it so much that I lost weight. Turns out, I had a natural talent for gardening, and they offered me additional shifts. It’s become a great way to get some fresh air, learn about plants, and engage in interesting activities. In the end, my father’s wish for me to have a backup plan has come true, as I now have a fulfilling part-time job in gardening.
