EastEnders boss Chris Clenshaw to step down after 40th anniversary

As a devoted cinephile with over three decades of television viewing under my belt, I must confess that Chris Clenshaw’s tenure as executive producer for EastEnders has been nothing short of a renaissance. His commitment to revitalizing the soap opera and making it “appointment viewing” again has truly paid off, and I am thrilled about his decision to keep the show creatively refreshed.

According to the BBC’s announcement, Chris Clenshaw plans to resign from his role as executive producer for EastEnders by next year.

I’ve held this role for three years now, but come February, as we celebrate our soap’s 40th anniversary, I’ll be passing the torch to Ben Wadey, a seasoned Hollyoaks producer from the past.

In 2022, when he assumed the role, he pledged to make “EastEnders” a must-watch event again, and indeed, he’s delivered on that promise with an abundance of intriguing storylines like Cindy Beale’s (Michelle Collins) comeback, Dot Cotton’s (June Brown) funeral, not to mention the captivating flash-forward/mystery about The Six.

Regarding his departure from EastEnders, Chris Clenshaw expressed: “Being an ardent admirer of EastEnders, it has been a profound privilege for me to serve as its guardian. It holds immense significance in my life, and I have poured my heart and soul into Walford.

I chose to resign following the 40th anniversary several months back, in order to maintain creative renewal for EastEnders since it’s a program that demands continuous growth and change.

After three years as captain and guiding our team during significant accomplishments, it seems fitting now for me to pass on the ownership of The Queen Vic.

Elstree holds a deep affection within my heart, and I anticipate the day of departure will be difficult. A heartfelt gratitude goes out to the exceptional EastEnders cast and team whom I’ve had the privilege of leading for several years. Their consistent encouragement has been invaluable, making my journey a memorable one.

Day after day, their dedication, zeal, and skill have left a profound impact on me. I’m deeply thankful for them and incredibly proud of the accomplishments we’ve shared along our journey.

Working on EastEnders has been an unparalleled highlight of my career, each moment a source of joy. However, the winds of change are blowing, and it’s time for fresh beginnings. I’m thrilled that I’ll continue to be part of the BBC Studios Drama Productions family.

Even though I won’t be leaving EastEnders for a while, while I’m still around, I’m eager to pour all my energy into making our upcoming milestone celebration truly memorable.

I’m delighted to be handing over the show to Ben Wadey. I believe that with him at the helm, EastEnders will continue to flourish, and I wholeheartedly wish him the greatest success. It’s indisputable that this is the finest job in television, and I hope he experiences the same enjoyment throughout his journey as I have.

“Thank you, EastEnders – for everything.”

After the 40th anniversary festivities in February, Wadey will resume his role as story editor on EastEnders, a position he held before this.

He played a significant role in introducing the Panesar family, and he also managed key episodes like the 35th anniversary specials and an episode focusing on Linda’s struggle with alcoholism.

Regarding his new position as executive producer, Wadey expressed his delight to rejoin EastEnders during a particularly intriguing phase for the series.

Nurtured on the stories and characters of EastEnders since childhood, my affection for television bloomed. Over the years, it seems as if I’ve grown up alongside the inhabitants of Walford. To guide this legendary BBC soap opera towards its future instalments is an exceptional honor.

I’m eagerly looking forward to working alongside the extraordinary EastEnders team, aiming to expand upon Chris Clenshaw’s outstanding achievements. Together, we will craft tales that captivate long-time fans of Albert Square as well as newcomers.

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
