Skottie Young Reveals His Take on New Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman Costumes in Absolute DC Variants

As a seasoned gamer with decades of comic book adventures under my belt, I must say that the latest revelation by Skottie Young about his “Absolute-LY” variant covers for DC’s upcoming titles has me absolutely thrilled! The distinctive style and frantic kinetic energy he brings to his work are a breath of fresh air in this crowded field.

Popular artist Skottie Young has unveiled a set of humorous “Absolute-LY” variant covers for the debut issues of DC’s new “Absolute” series of comics. This collection, showcasing fresh interpretations of DC characters, is set to be released in October as part of DC’s larger “All In” campaign, which kicks off with DC All In #1 next week. All-In, penned by Snyder and Williamson, will serve as a flipbook, with one side illustrated by Daniel Sampere and the other by Wes Craig. The narrative will alternate between Superman’s viewpoint and that of Darkseid in this release. These “Absolute” titles are based on an Earth reshaped by Darkseid, much like Doomsday Clock revealed the DC Universe was molded by Superman.

Instead of directly stating it, you could express the information like this: At his Substack, Young showcases not only the end results (the images) but also snapshots and clips of his creative journey – the process behind those captivating pieces. To witness this, head over to his Substack here.

In his writing, Young expressed that he found it challenging to decide on an approach for these projects. Initially, he considered designing interconnected covers, but soon abandoned the idea. Instead, he began exploring various existing versions of these titles, which he found incredibly impressive and cool. This led him to reconsider his options. In a way reminiscent of his thoughts regarding the TMNT cover, he realized that he wouldn’t be able to outshine all the other stunning covers. So, he decided to follow his usual approach and create something amusing to make himself laugh. When faced with uncertainty, his go-to strategy is to inject humor into the situation, as he often says.

Known for his unique spin on characters at Marvel, where he’s worked on variant covers and sequential stories, this individual (let’s call him Young) is the mastermind behind the self-owned comic “I Hate Fairyland,” published by Image. In a market saturated with variants for Absolute cover art, Young’s designs are expected to stand out significantly from the typical “house style.” However, his work bears a resemblance in terms of frenetic energy to that of artist Wes Craig from “Deadly Class,” who has recently joined DC and is contributing to projects like “All-In” and the Absolute universe.

In an earlier announcement, Scott Snyder revealed that during the occurrences of Absolute Power, Darkseid, unbeknownst to the superheroes, begins to sense a peculiar gap. This intriguing moment in Absolute Power is not yet disclosed to avoid spoilers. As Darkseid recognizes this shift, it propels him on a mission that will lead to confrontations with the new Justice League, orchestrated by Superman – a more formidable league. The clash between these two powerful forces will redefine the DC cosmos.
