As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the upcoming expansion for Age of Mythology: Retold titled Immortal Pillars has piqued my interest significantly. Having played the original Age of Mythology and its expansions in the early 2000s, I am eager to see how the Chinese civilization will be reimagined in this new expansion.
The next mythological sortie is heading into the east.
In our previous knowledge, it was confirmed that Age of Mythology: Retold is set to receive an expansion featuring a revamped Chinese faction. Recently, the team at World’s Edge and Xbox Game Studios unveiled a sneak peek into what players might experience during their presentation at the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2024.
This sneak peek discloses that the upcoming expansion is named “Immortal Pillars,” displaying some of the fresh units and abilities the Chinese faction will deploy both in multiplayer battles and a new campaign. Take a look at it here:
According to the official Steam description, Immortal Pillars allows players to summon the fierce goddess Nüwa, lead Chiyou, the war-god with a bull’s head, and summon Nüba, the merciless deity who brings drought. Take control of the skies with Yinglong, the powerful flying rain dragon, and prepare for an extraordinary adventure.
Currently, there isn’t a specific release date announced yet, but according to its development schedule, Immortal Pillars is expected to be launched sometime before the end of 2024. This game will be part of the Premium Edition of Age of Mythology and also included in the Premium Upgrade for those playing via Xbox Game Pass.
Age of Mythology: Retold has more DLC ahead
The initial Age of Mythology did introduce a Chinese-themed expansion pack, but it was met with unfavorable responses from gamers due to persistent complaints about its gameplay balance and design.
Due to their findings, the team at World’s Edge opted to construct a completely new Chinese faction from scratch, rather than merely adjusting what was previously made. As for Age of Mythology: Retold, there is at least one more expansion on the horizon that will introduce yet another faction. At present, we don’t have many details, but we do know that this second expansion is expected to launch in 2025.
In my assessment of Age of Mythology: Retold, I expressed that if you were fond of the original Age of Mythology, then it’s definitely worth picking up. Even for those who are hesitant about diving into a strategy game due to inexperience, I recommend giving it a shot. The gameplay adjustments, controller compatibility, and accessibility features make this world of gods and monsters an excellent introduction to the strategy genre.
At the moment, Age of Mythology: Retold can be found on both Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC platforms. Similar to other Xbox first-party titles, this game is also accessible through Xbox Game Pass.
