As a long-time PlayStation devotee with a heart full of nostalgia and a wallet light as a feather, I can’t help but feel disheartened by the events unfolding around the 30th Anniversary PlayStation 5 Pro. Having witnessed the rise and fall of many gaming generations, I’ve seen my fair share of limited-edition consoles that have been coveted and cherished by fellow enthusiasts. However, this latest development has taken me aback, leaving me with a sense of both admiration for the resilience of scalpers and a twinge of disappointment in humanity.
This morning, Sony’s 30th Anniversary Edition of the PlayStation 5 Pro was snapped up in a flash, leading to exorbitant prices popping up on eBay. Before the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary bundle was even listed for sale, scalpers on various resale platforms were asking for $10,000 (and more) for this extremely limited Sony product. Now that the console has been sold at PlayStation Direct, some are attempting to quickly resell the hardware for up to five times its original price.
Looking at completed listings of the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary bundle on eBay, it appears that the console is typically selling for over $4,000. The majority of sales are around the $3,000 mark, but some have gone as high as $4,200, $4,500, and even $5,200. There’s been one instance where someone paid $5,200 for the bundle, which seems to be the highest price so far. On the lower end, a sale of $1,500 has taken place, representing an increase of $500 over the bundle’s original retail price.
In the days ahead, it will be intriguing to monitor how the costs for the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary bundle escalate further. After the pre-orders for the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary console concluded, the resale prices on eBay have persistently increased. Consequently, there’s a strong likelihood that these resale prices will keep soaring and possibly surpass the $6,000 mark in the near future.
Over time, it’s expected that the limited edition PS5 Pro (30th Anniversary version) will hold its worth due to its rarity as one of Sony’s least produced consoles. With only 12,300 units manufactured globally, this is why it’s being resold at high prices. For dedicated PlayStation fans who wish to possess a piece of the brand’s past, this console will likely remain a coveted collector’s item. However, whether its resale value will drop in the future is yet to be determined.
