After 10 Years, Hunter x Hunter Is Overdue For a New Anime

As a gamer with over 20 years of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the return of Hunter x Hunter has been one of the most exciting events in the anime community in recent memory. Having grown up with this manga, I remember the initial release of the 1998 anime and the subsequent series that followed.

The comeback of the manga “Hunter x Hunter” has been one of the most significant anime news stories in recent times. Due to the ongoing health issues of creator Yoshihiro Togashi, this popular shonen manga had to take extended breaks. Although it resumed weekly releases, Togashi’s health problems caused another interruption in its schedule. As of October, the manga will continue with the Succession Contest Arc, but unfortunately, there has been no indication yet about the return of “Hunter x Hunter” anime, which ended in 2014 and is still worth exploring for a new generation.

Studio Madhouse’s adaptation of the anime series “Hunter x Hunter” is often considered the most comprehensive portrayal of its television history, but it wasn’t the initial attempt at bringing Yoshihiro Togashi’s story to life on screen. In fact, back in 1998, Studio Pierrot (known for “Naruto” and “Bleach”) released a brief anime film that introduced Gon and his companions on television for the first time. This was followed by a series from Nippon Animation spanning sixty-two episodes, with an OVA of thirty episodes in 2002. With nearly one hundred fifty episodes, Madhouse’s “Hunter x Hunter” was the most extensive adaptation, covering up to the “Election Arc,” and wrapping up in 2014.

Hunter x Hunter: A Continuation or a Reboot?

Many anime enthusiasts are eager for the chance to revisit “Hunter x Hunter,” but there’s debate about whether it should resume where Madhouse left off or if a fresh studio should begin anew from the start. Madhouse’s anime concluded around the same time as Chapter 339, and since the manga series has now reached Chapter 400, a continuation of the show might necessitate one or two more seasons to reach the current Succession Contest Arc.

It’s been a decade since Gon had a face-to-face encounter with his father during the Election Arc in the series, and fans might welcome another chance to watch this Madhouse production again to refresh their memories. Conversely, launching a remake or reboot of the anime would place it alongside popular titles like Fullmetal Alchemist, Hellsing, Urusei Yatsura, and Ranma 1/2. Interestingly, even One Piece, which continues to release new episodes for its main series, is planning a reboot with Netflix collaborating with Wit Studio, effectively starting from the beginning.

Why Now Is The Perfect Time For Hunter x Hunter To Return

One might assume that, without any new anime in a decade or frequent manga delays, interest in the “Hunter x Hunter” universe might have waned slightly. Yet, surprisingly, creator Yoshihiro Togashi remains one of the most popular manga artists on social media, and news about fresh “Hunter x Hunter” chapters consistently trends high. Even theme parks like Universal Studios Japan acknowledge the fervor this shonen series has cultivated and have introduced a ride featuring Gon and his companions.

The popularity of Hunter x Hunter continues to thrive, with the 2014-ended anime being available on several platforms like Netflix, Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Peacock. Fans eagerly anticipate a new movie, revival, or continuation of the Madhouse series, as it’s high time for us to revisit Yoshihiro Togashi’s universe and reconnect with this cherished shonen classic once more.
