Marvel Quietly Reveals Avengers vs. X-Men (Again) With One Hero in the Middle

As a longtime Marvel fan with over two decades of comics under my belt, I must say that the upcoming Avengers vs. X-Men sequel has me absolutely thrilled! The original event was a game-changer for both teams and left lasting consequences on the Marvel Universe. With Jed MacKay at the helm of both Avengers and X-Men titles, I have high hopes for the storytelling and character development in this crossover.

It seems a new chapter in the saga between the Avengers and X-Men, reminiscent of “Avengers vs. X-Men” from 2012, might be forthcoming. In that event, the Avengers and Marvel’s mutant team, the X-Men, clashed over the Phoenix Force. Lately, they have been allies, working together to dismantle anti-mutant group Orchis. However, their current camaraderie could soon dissipate by year-end, as the Avengers and X-Men are set for another confrontation. Interestingly, Storm, the thunder deity, appears to be caught in the middle of this impending clash.

The December 2024 lineup from Marvel features issue #21 of Avengers, and it looks like we’re in for another epic clash: Avengers vs. X-Men. The writer, Jed MacKay, is responsible for both series, making a crossover event more likely. Marvel hints that the repercussions of this battle will bring significant changes to the Marvel Universe. Valerio Schiti’s cover depicts Captain Marvel delivering a punch to Cyclops, suggesting a disagreement between these two leaders. What stands out is Storm being shown with the X-Men, even though she recently took Thor’s place on the Avengers team, who is currently on a break.

What is Marvel’s new Avengers vs. X-Men about?

The announcement for December’s issue #21 of Avengers states, “Avengers face off against X-Men in a battle that lays the groundwork for significant future events! Jed MacKay has his Avengers and X-Men clashing in an exciting storyline! Captain Marvel and Cyclops lock horns! The Scarlet Witch and Magneto address their past! And Storm’s allegiance is put to the test…

It remains unclear what triggers the Avengers and X-Men to clash, but it rarely takes much for superheroes to find themselves at odds due to their numerous egos. Conflict is inevitable in such a setting. Over time, characters like Storm, Wolverine, Sunspot, Cannonball, Rogue, Beast, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver have switched teams. Additionally, the Avengers Unity Squad, also known as the Uncanny Avengers, were established to allow the Avengers to focus on mutant-related issues.

In addition to the well-known clash between the Avengers and the X-Men, there are other tales that delve into internal turmoil. As Marvel hints at a sequel to “Avengers vs. X-Men,” they’ve also unveiled a four-issue series titled “Raid on Graymalkin.” This crossover event will unfold within Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman’s “X-Men” comic, as well as Gail Simone and David Marquez’s “Uncanny X-Men.

The operation titled “Raid on Graymalkin” commences in December, involving a tense confrontation at the Graymalkin Penitentiary. This facility once housed the Xavier Institute and currently holds Charles Xavier as an inmate. It’s highly possible that Professor X is the enigmatic “Prisoner X” hinted by warden Dr. Corina Ellis in the opening issue of Uncanny X-Men. Marvel has subtly suggested that Dr. Ellis may have a hidden tool against the X-Men, and there are doubts about whether Professor X is worth saving given his questionable actions during the Fall of X incident.
