The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom: Is Link Playable?

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of Zelda adventures under my belt, I must admit that the release of “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom” has left me both intrigued and somewhat perplexed. It’s refreshing to see Zelda stepping into the limelight, but as a lifelong Link enthusiast, it’s hard not to miss the iconic green-clad hero during the main campaign.

The video game titled “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom” is now accessible on the Nintendo Switch. In a first for the main series, Zelda serves as the primary character, with her journey dominating the narrative. Yet, it’s understandable that dedicated fans might question if they’ll get a chance to control Link, the franchise’s enduring protagonist. Initially, players will indeed assume the role of Hyrule’s hero when the game commences, but this is only during the beginning. From then on, the game is Zelda’s story from start to finish. Nintendo justifies this by explaining that the game’s new Echo system plays a significant role in this decision.

As I delve into Echoes of Wisdom, it’s like I’m wrapping up a typical Link quest, complete with an arsenal of tools and a plump supply of vitality. The goal? To vanquish Ganon, rescue the captive Zelda ensconced within a colossal crystal. In this game, we momentarily become Link in a brief skirmish against Ganon. Victory achieved, the villain is defeated, but not before a Rift emerges, consuming both him and me. With quick reflexes, I manage to shoot an arrow at the crystal before being sucked in, which creates a crack just wide enough for Zelda to escape.

Starting from that juncture, the narrative spotlights Zelda as the central character. In this scenario, there’s no pre-existing bond between us (Link) and Zelda. Instead, the game delves into her getting acquainted with me, a man on a mission to mend the rifts threatening Hyrule and its people. Although I’m not directly controllable beyond the initial stages, my presence is consistently felt. Throughout the journey, Zelda crosses paths with me in the Stilled Realm, and also confronts a dark reflection of myself that she must vanquish at various points within the game.

Although players can’t play as Link during the main storyline, they can acquire outfits modeled after his appearance. The illustration provided showcases the Red Tunic, reminiscent of the red attire worn by Link in many games like Ocarina of Time.
