Is Emmerdale’s Tom King dead as evil character is struck down with an axe?

As a former victim of domestic abuse who has walked the same harrowing path as Belle, I must say that tonight’s Emmerdale episode left me with a mix of emotions – relief, anger, and a heavy heart. Relief for Belle, as she finally stood up to her tormentor; anger at the brutality Tom displayed towards her, and a heavy heart because it echoed all too painfully familiar scenes from my past.

This article contains discussion of domestic abuse, including coercive control, that some readers may find upsetting.

In tonight’s thrilling episode of Emmerdale (September 26, 2024), viewers found themselves questioning whether Tom King (James Chase) suffered a tragic fate.

For several months, Tom has been using physical violence, psychological manipulation (gaslighting), and domineering control over his wife, Belle (Eden Taylor-Draper). As she began to gather evidence to report him to the police, Belle was slowly envisioning a life free from her ordeal.

However, Tom, the one who’s been lying low lately, now has his new companion, Amelia Spencer (Daisy Campbell), supporting him.

Tonight, Amelia confided in Amy Barton (Natalie Ann Jamieson) that she now trusted Belle, however, it was later discovered that this trust was feigned as she was overheard telling Tom that she would comply with his wishes.

Later on, Amelia inquired from Belle if they could have a conversation at Wishing Well cottage, pretending she intended to assist her. However, it was just a ruse. At home by herself, Belle felt petrified when Tom unexpectedly entered and confined her within the house, exposing Amelia’s part in orchestrating the entire incident.

Tom continued to belittle Belle, grabbing her phone when she attempted to seek assistance and accusing her of ruining their marriage, all while Belle denounced each cruel action he had taken towards her and labeled him as “a feeble, pitiful manipulator.

On another attempt to depart, Tom pushed Belle violently to the ground, repeatedly striking her. A dazed and shaken Belle was later observed, gazing at the blood flowing from her wounds.

Under pressure, she hid her fear as a delivery person placed a package outside. Not long after, she grabbed her brother Sam Dingle’s (James Hooton) shotgun and menaced Tom, intending to use it to create an opportunity for her to flee.

In pursuit of Belle, Tom found himself at a cottage where she had taken refuge. Frightened for her safety, Belle tried to prevent Tom from entering. However, he discovered her location and approached with an axe in hand, demanding access.

Recognizing the peril she was in, Belle let out a terrified yell as Tom forced open the door using an axe. Trying to defend herself, she found that her gun was set to safe mode instead.

In a surprising twist of events, a self-satisfied Tom grabbed the gun, removed its safety, and readied himself to fire at Belle – but instead, he unwittingly left himself open to be felled by Belle’s axe! Standing over Tom’s motionless body, did Belle end his life?
