Iconic '90s Thriller Getting Reboot Starring Modern-Day Scream Queen

As a fan who has witnessed the mesmerizing performances of Maika Monroe in various horror films like “It Follows,” “The Guest,” and “Watcher,” I am thrilled to see her taking on yet another challenging role in the remake of “The Hand that Rocks the Cradle.” Her portrayal of Claire Bartel promises to bring a fresh perspective to this classic domestic thriller.

Actress Maika Monroe will headline a modern retelling of the 1992 thriller “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,” originally starring Rebecca De Mornay. This film, which gained popularity during the late ’80s and early ‘90s among domestic thrillers, revolved around a mentally unstable widow who tormented a couple. In the original story, De Mornay portrayed a woman whose obstetrician husband took his own life after being accused of abusing one of his patients. The emotional turmoil from his charges and subsequent death led to her having a miscarriage. After the miscarriage, she suffered a mental breakdown and sought vengeance on the patient and the husband.

Previously, the initial movie was distributed under Disney’s Buena Vista Pictures and Hollywood Pictures labels, which no longer exist. Now, it will be developed by 20th Century Studios, formerly known as 20th Century Fox. As reported first by The Hollywood Reporter, Michelle Garza Cervera is slated to direct the remake. This production is being handled by Radar Pictures’ Ted Field and Michael Schaefer, along with Mike Larocca, through their Department M imprint.

According to THR, Monroe is set to portray Claire, the character who was initially brought to life by Annabella Sciorra in the role of the doctor’s victim. As for the antagonist and both husbands, no casting decisions have been made as of yet. The original movie featured Matt McCoy, Ernie Hudson, and Julianne Moore, and it raked in $140 million at the box office, while its production budget was around $12 million.

Monroe has established herself as a contemporary figure of terror with parts in films such as “It Follows”, “The Guest”, and “Watcher”. Her next role will be alongside Emma Corrin, who is known for her part as Deadpool and Wolverine, in the film “100 Nights of Hero”. It’s said that “Longlegs” has become one of the most financially successful independent horror movies in recent times, considering its minimal budget and earnings surpassing $100 million globally.

In the movie The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, as described in its Google Play synopsis, “When the doctor who assaulted her committed suicide after being accused by Claire Bartel (Annabella Sciorra), a distraught Peyton (Rebecca De Mornay), the doctor’s wife, lost her unborn child. Enraged by the accusations and the death of her husband, she disguised herself as a nanny for the Bartel family with the intention of destroying Claire’s life, winning over her husband (Matt McCoy), and ultimately taking revenge on the woman whom she believed had ruined her life.
