As someone who has always found solace in the comforting embrace of period dramas, I am beyond thrilled about the upcoming Channel 5 series, The Hardacres. The trailer alone has me hooked, promising a captivating journey from humble beginnings as herring merchants to the grandeur of an 1890s Yorkshire estate.
If you’re fond of All Creatures Great and Small, prepare yourself for more delight, as the same creative minds are launching a fresh Channel 5 series, promising another engaging period drama worthy of your binge-watching time.
In the trailer, we get a glimpse of the journey the series takes us on, starting with the struggles of a diligent family as they deal with herring trade at the docks, and culminating in their ownership of a grand estate in 1890s Yorkshire. Quite an uplifting tale of success, wouldn’t you agree?
In the trailer, it appears that the family’s circumstances unfold as they employ their unique skill, which is catching and selling herrings, in order to earn an income.
Initially, they faced difficulties affording rent and lived in a small space, but eventually, they achieved the dream of running their very own herring store, which brought them substantial income.
However, once they acquired their wealth, they were thrust into an upper-class circle which was entirely unfamiliar to them.
The Hardacres seem brimming with plenty of daily life challenges, adapting to contemporary styles and hairstyles, and navigating through the haughty society, suggesting a high dose of intrigue and drama.
The upcoming drama hails from Playground, the esteemed production house known for All Creatures Great and Small, and similar to other popular Channel 5 shows, it too is adapted from a collection of books.
The TV show ‘Hardacres’ derives its inspiration from the popular book series ‘The Hardacre Family Saga’ by CL Skelton, specifically volumes 1 and 2. It is characterized as a daring, courageous family drama that resonates deeply with an emphasis on emotion.
The show, filmed on-site in Dublin and County Wicklow, Ireland, delves into the idea if wealth truly equates to genuine contentment, as it chronicles a family’s fresh endeavors.
In the ensemble of The Hardacres, you’ll find Claire Cooper from The Continental, Liam McMahon known for Hunger, Julie Graham recognized in Time, Adam Little famous as Ackley Bridge’s character, Zak Ford-Williams from Better, and debutant Shannon Lavelle.
Among the other actors in the cast are Holly Sturton (from The School for Good and Evil), portraying Adella; Cathy Belton (known from Miss Scarlet & The Duke) as Emma; and Owen Roe (recognized for his role in Michael Collins) playing George. Together, they represent the affluent Fitzherbert Family, who have recently moved in next door to The Hardacres.
In the roles they play, Ingrid Craigie from “You Are Not My Mother” is Mrs. Dryden, Siobhan O’Kelly in “The Tourist” takes on Lena, Sarah Agha of “Homeland” portrays Betsy, and Taheen Modak in “The Bay” acts as Saunders.
Speaking about the fresh series, producer Simon Cox expressed his joy, mentioning, “From our very first reading of the Hardacre scripts, we were instantly captivated by their world. We’re thrilled with the talented cast that Playground has brought together.
There’s no question that international viewers will find it captivating to join this gifted acting family on their adventure.
The Hardacres begins on Channel 5 on Monday 7th October at 9pm.
