Looking forward to the launch of “Flint: Treasure of Oblivion”, we had the pleasure of speaking with Maxime Josse, the CEO and President of Savage Level. Maxime offered valuable insights into the game’s development, revealing their deep affection for pirate tales. He detailed how they skillfully combined historical facts with fantastical elements to offer a one-of-a-kind adventure.

Additionally, we delved into the unique fighting techniques that make Flint stand out from others. Join us as we uncover the influences and obstacles in the creation of Flint: Treasure of Oblivion.

What inspired the creation of Flint: Treasure of Oblivion, and how did the idea evolve into the game we see today?

Our team, including the founders, and many members have been passionate about the pirate universe since childhood. This shared love for pirates has become a part of our collective heritage. Moreover, our studio embodies and functions by certain pirate principles, such as camaraderie being one example. We also have connections to pirate experts, some of whom we’ve collaborated with on popular pirate-themed literature and games. By merging these elements, we created Flint: Treasure of Oblivion.

Can you tell us more about the unique blend of historical pirate lore and fantasy elements in the game? How did you strike that balance?

In crafting Flint: Treasure of Oblivion, it was essential to merge real-life piracy lore with fantastical elements. The golden age of piracy, indeed a genuine slice of history, demanded careful research and interaction with experts to accurately represent it in the game. This process was not only laborious but also an enjoyable experience for us as fans. While the fantasy aspects are well recognized by the public, they’re less frequently associated. Legends like the Kraken, mermaids, and others abound during this era.

The game includes some comic book-inspired narrative/art styles. What led to the decision to use this visual direction, and how do you feel it enhances the player experience?

In the interactive stages of the game, elements similar to comic books are predominantly used. Their purpose is to simplify and blend the manner in which a story unfolds within the video game. This approach allows the player to remain engrossed in the game while moving smoothly through the narrative, without interrupting the gameplay with lengthy expository segments.

Tactical turn-based combat plays a significant role in Flint: Treasure of Oblivion. How did you design the combat system, and what influenced its mechanics?

To ensure an authentic 18th-century warfare feel in our game, we concentrated on accurately portraying the weapons and tactics of that era. Each weapon has distinct attributes influencing gameplay, necessitating players to adapt their strategies. The system encompasses morale control and strategic placement. Players can retaliate based on the enemy’s actions. By excluding magic and technology, we prioritized realistic combat methods and historical strategies, offering an engaging and historically accurate gaming experience.

Can you dive deeper into the skill card and dice roll system? How do they work, and how do they add strategy to the gameplay?

In games, dice are employed to decide uncertain outcomes, adding a touch of randomness and risk. On the other hand, cards stand for a character’s abilities, becoming active after varying intervals based on their level, ensuring consistent and foreseeable results. The strategic richness is found in managing these two aspects: players need to handle the dice’s unpredictability while utilizing the cards’ reliability. By strategizing moves, enhancing skills, and readjusting placements, players increase their chances of winning.

The story of Captain Flint and his crew feels rich and immersive. How did you approach storytelling in the game, and what were some of your main influences?

The primary inspirations for the game’s narrative and design stem from our cherished childhood memories, particularly the enchanting realms of pirates and comics. Previously mentioned, we have been avid enthusiasts of these worlds, immersing ourselves in countless books about piracy, as well as a wide variety of comic books. Beyond that, we’ve delved into numerous movies, documentaries, and tabletop games related to these themes. This rich tapestry of experiences has sparked our imagination, leading us to envision a fresh approach for storytelling in video games – emulating the classic style of comic strips.

After utilizing our available assets, we combined content with research, engaged experts in the field for discussions, conducted more research, put in considerable effort towards the solution’s development, and eventually applied it to the game. The outcome was the storyline of Flint: Treasure of Oblivion.

With multiple environments to explore, from Saint-Malo to Central America, what were your design goals for creating diverse, visually stunning locations?

Deriving joy from guiding players on an immersive gaming adventure, while maintaining a consistent pirate narrative that reflects their nomadic lifestyle. Moreover, it’s a delight to create these games, for we are ardent video game enthusiasts at heart.

What challenges did you face in integrating historically accurate elements like pirate language and costumes with the game’s fantasy features?

Previously mentioned, these two components have a significant role in History. We delved into aspects such as clothing styles, societal norms, traditions, but also the “mythical aspects” of that era, ensuring an harmonious fusion. There’s a wealth of information available on these topics, and as lifelong enthusiasts of pirates, this project was not just work but a cherished cultural experience.

Savage Level is known for deep gameplay and strong artistic direction. How does Flint: Treasure of Oblivion reflect your studio’s creative philosophy?

The artistic style of the game is clearly evident upon first glance, a testament to the creative vision of Aurelien Josse, our Creative Director, who has also directed games from his previous studio Tindalos Interactive. We aimed for a gameplay depth that would be both easy to pick up but challenging to master, and we found the ideal balance between Aurelien Josse’s and Johan Spielmann’s expertise, with the latter serving as our Game Director.

How important is player choice in shaping the narrative and combat experience? Are there multiple paths players can take in their quest?

The decisions a player makes have a substantial impact on both the storyline’s development and the tactical aspects of gameplay, even if the changes aren’t immediately apparent. While the primary plot stays fairly consistent, the choices made by players shape the game world in significant ways, such as deciding which characters to recruit and what resources they amass. These choices may not drastically alter the plot but they greatly influence the makeup of the player’s party and the battle strategies available. By choosing which allies join your quest and how they develop over time, you can create unique combat scenarios, leading to a variety of gameplay experiences tailored to your strategy.

What are you most excited for players to experience when they finally get their hands on Flint: Treasure of Oblivion?

The “Flint Treasure of Oblivion” offers a comprehensive gaming experience. We derived equal enjoyment from crafting the exploration, battles, and storyline. It’s challenging to separate these elements as they intertwine significantly within the game. However, we’re eagerly anticipating players immersing themselves in it overall!

Looking to the future, are there any plans for expansions, DLCs, or additional content after the game’s release?

Currently, we’re devoting all our efforts towards creating an exceptional base game experience for you. At the moment, we don’t have plans for expansions, downloadable content, or extra features. Our aim is to make sure that the game exceeds your expectations upon release and shines with polish, engagement, and a clear representation of the enthusiasm our team has invested in it.
