As a seasoned gamer who has been following the StarCraft series since its inception, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement upon hearing the rumors about a new StarCraft game in development. The anticipation is palpable, like waiting for Zerglings to hatch, or Protoss Pylons to finish charging.
It’s been seven years since StarCraft: Remastered came out, eight years since the last expansion of StarCraft 2, and nearly a decade and a half since the original release of StarCraft 2. This means that fans of Blizzard’s sci-fi strategy series have gone without new content for quite some time. However, it appears that the company might be planning to revive this franchise in some way.
According to journalist Jason Schreier, who recently discussed his upcoming book “Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment” on the IGN Unlocked podcast (as reported by Windows Central), there’s a rumor that a new StarCraft game is being developed within Blizzard Entertainment.
According to Schreier, the game under discussion is a spin-off from the shooter genre that originated when Blizzard Entertainment scrapped their survival game “Odyssey” earlier this year during Microsoft’s initial round of layoffs. Despite most of the project team being dismissed, a few members remained and began incubating a new StarCraft-themed shooter. At present, this project is reportedly in its early development stages, with Dan Hay, an ex-Ubisoft employee who was well-known for his work on Far Cry, apparently overseeing the project’s leadership.
Back in the day, I remember Blizzard Entertainment venturing into the world of StarCraft shooters for the first time with the legendary, yet troubled project, StarCraft: Ghost, announced way back in 2002. Regrettably, it took over a decade for this game to be officially shelved. Rumor has it that another attempt was made with Ares, a Battlefield-inspired shooter, which unfortunately didn’t make it past 2019. For more details on the Ares saga, check out this link.
It’s yet uncertain if this fresh project will fare better than its abandoned predecessors, but it’s indeed positive that Blizzard Entertainment is making efforts to revive the franchise from its prolonged hiatus.
Additionally, regarding the latest updates from the StarCraft universe, both StarCraft: Remastered and StarCraft 2: Campaign Collection will be accessible on PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate starting in November.
