As a seasoned viewer of British television, I must say that the cast for ITV’s upcoming series “Joan” seems quite intriguing. Each character appears to have a unique backstory and dynamic, which is always captivating to watch unfold.
At long last, the much-awaited ITV series titled “Joan” will make its debut on our television screens. It promises to recount the remarkable true tale of Britain’s most infamous jewel thief.
As a cinema enthusiast, I can’t wait to delve into the six-part series starring Sophie Turner, where I follow the journey of a devoted mother who’s forced to navigate a maze of tough choices to shield her child. This odyssey unwittingly leads her into the underbelly of crime, as she adopts various masks to rise through the ranks and become an unrivaled mastermind in this intriguing world.
The upcoming TV show draws heavily from the real-life tale of Joan Hannington. Producer Ruth Kenley-Letts (Stonehouse) openly acknowledged that Joan played a crucial role in transforming her story into what we see on our screens.
Speaking during a press conference for the series, she said: “I really wanted Joan to be happy with the scripts we wrote. I always have felt a huge responsibility to make sure that we sort of stay true to her story.”

Sophie Turner plays Joan Hannington
What is Joan like? In the midst of a damaging romance with Gary, Kelly’s father, Joan finds herself in a perilous predicament when Gary brings trouble right to her doorstep. To ensure the safety of her child, she makes a bold move and relocates to London, embarking on a new journey. There, she encounters Boise, who opens up a whole different criminal realm for her.
At a press conference for the series, Turner expressed that playing the character was “the high point of my career.” She explained, “To portray someone as complex as Joan, who is both hilarious and has endured immense trauma, yet remains ambitious and multi-faceted, is a unique challenge. She’s a mother, lover, liar, thief – and so much more.
Have you come across Sophie Turner before? She’s primarily recognized for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, but she has also appeared in the X-Men series as Jean Grey/Phoenix, The Thirteenth Tale, Do Revenge, and The Staircase.
Frank Dillane plays Boise Hannington
In simpler terms, who is Boise? He’s an antique dealer who has a mysterious background. Boise encounters Joan when she shifts to London, and they discover that their professional partnership turns out to be a perfect fit.
Have you recognized Frank Dillane from Fear The Walking Dead, The Essex Serpent, Renegade Nell, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, or perhaps from the movie Papadopoulous & Sons where he acted alongside his father, Stephen Dillane?
Kirsty J Curtis plays Nancy
Nancy is Joan’s sibling, the proprietor of a stylish hair salon situated in London. She hopes that Joan will prioritize her job more diligently so she can regain custody of Kelly.
At a press event for the show, Curtis explained Joan’s multifaceted character: “Joan has many siblings, she’s the youngest of seven and three of them are her sisters. So, in a way, I embody all her sisters combined, and the stories of all her sisters are woven into Joan’s narrative, as well as those portrayed by Nancy.
Have you recognized Kirsty J Curtis from any previous roles? She’s been featured in EastEnders, Harlots, Match Not Found, and Timewasters.
Gershwyn Eustache Jr plays Albie
Albie is one of Boise’s acquaintances, residing in Spain. They had been cellmates during their prison stints. Although they frequently collaborate on business ventures, Albie initially isn’t fond of Joan when they first meet.
Have I encountered Gershwyn Eustache Jr somewhere before? Here’s a list of shows he’s been in: A Spy Among Friends, Andor, Britannia, Stephen, and I May Destroy You. He’s also set to appear in Channel 4’s Get Millie Black. So, I might have crossed paths with him in one of these productions!
Laura Aikman plays Val
Is Val known as Albie’s spouse? Unlike Joan, she seems to be less informed about her husband’s questionable business activities. Val resides in Spain with her family, which includes her husband and son, although the reasons for their stay are somewhat unclear.
Have you recognized Laura Aikman from somewhere? She’s the actress who starred in ITV’s Archie, but she’s also familiar from her earlier roles on shows like Waterloo Road, Gavin & Stacey, Casualty, and 4 O’Clock Club.
Alex Blake plays Bernard
“Who’s Bernard? He’s the jewelry store manager who gives Joan a job. Although he appears friendly and thoughtful, it turns out that he’s quite suspicious and has ulterior motives, wanting a romantic relationship with Joan.
Have I encountered Alex Blake somewhere because I recognize him from his roles in shows like The Crown (as Stephen Lamport), Andor, Dangerous Liaisons, Doctors, and Strangers?
Joan will premiere on ITV and ITVX on Sunday 29th September at 9pm.
