In a moving tribute, the opening episode of Grey’s Anatomy’s 21st season on ABC honored Stephanie Leifer, who tragically passed away in June at the age of 56.

Who is Stephanie Leifer?
Leifer served as a programming executive for two decades, split between ABC, the American broadcasting network where the show is aired, and its affiliated production company, ABC Signature.
Her last role was as head of current programming at ABC Signature, which she exited in 2022.
Prior to this, she had been climbing her way up at ABC for a span of 12 years. She started there in 1994 as an assistant and eventually reached the position of executive in the departments of current programming, drama development, and comedy development.
Leifer switched over to the studio side in 2006.
Throughout her extensive tenure at ABC, Leifer contributed significantly to some of the most iconic television series that graced their airwaves, such as Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, and Ugly Betty.
Disney Entertainment Television expressed profound sadness after learning about Stephanie’s passing, as she had been a cherished part of their family for nearly three decades,” stated a representative from Disney Entertainment Television upon hearing the heartbreaking news.
She held a respected position as an executive, with her innovative contributions mirrored by the connections she cultivated, not just within our company but also throughout the industry. Our deepest sympathies are extended to her family, particularly her spouse, Jonathan who is one of us, and their two charming children, Amelia and Noah.
Before starting at ABC, Leifer was employed by WGBH-TV in Boston and also worked for the Writers and Artists Agency.
Meg Marinis, the executive producer and showrunner of Grey’s Anatomy, expressed to Deadline that they are dedicating the season 21 premiere to Stephanie Leifer. Marinis wrote the episode and explained, “Stephanie Leifer was an extraordinary individual and a passionate advocate for Grey’s Anatomy. She wholeheartedly believed in our team from the beginning and consistently backed our creative ideas.
I began my professional journey as a Personal Assistant, bringing scripts for Grey’s Anatomy to her office, and her door was always welcoming. She was incredibly supportive of writers and made an effort to attend key moments in the show’s history. Her passing was deeply felt within our community.
