As a devoted fan of the Lord of the Rings franchise, I must admit that I was initially taken aback by the unexpected kiss shared between Elrond and Galadriel in The Rings of Power season 2 episode 7. However, upon further reflection, I can appreciate the practicality and emotional intensity behind this scene.
*Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Rings of Power season 2 episode 7.*
In the realm of cinematic storytelling, I found myself utterly taken aback by the seventh episode of The Rings of Power season 2, an installment that left fans spellbound and divided over a surprising kiss. Interestingly enough, the actors themselves confessed to being equally astounded by this unexpected plot twist.
In the most recent addition to the Lord of the Rings side story, Morfydd Clark’s character Galadriel was captured during the Siege of Eregion by Adar, played by Sam Hazeldine.
Approaching her with Adar and his Orcs nearby, Elrond (Robert Aramayo) bids her farewell with a tender kiss. He secretly gives her a key-like object to aid her in unlocking her restraints and making an escape.
Although many viewers appreciate the practical aspects of the kiss between the characters, who are often depicted as close friends, some fans feel somewhat uncomfortable given that in Tolkien’s lore, Elrond eventually marries Galadriel’s daughter Celebrían. This would make Galadriel his mother-in-law, which might seem unusual to some readers familiar with the original stories.
“Aramayo made it clear he didn’t sense any romantic feelings,” he said. “Instead, it was a heartfelt farewell to someone very significant in his life, whom he believes is no longer alive. Adar declared, ‘We’ll meet again on the battlefield, with her head as a trophy.’
“Which would be a much worse kiss!” quipped co-star Benjamin Walker (High King Gil-Galad).
Aramayo went on to say: “He has this one opportunity to approach her to hand over the keys, which could be their ticket to freedom. It accomplishes two things, it’s practical and it serves as a farewell. It’s a moment charged with emotion, but I was taken aback when I read about it too.
Inquired about whether Clark felt surprised as well upon reading the script, he responded: “Indeed, we were both taken aback. We embarked on a voyage together, spending considerable time expressing shock like, ‘Wow!’ before ultimately circling back to, ‘You know what? This is actually intriguing and unforeseen, and we can make something meaningful out of it.’
Fortunately, they both managed to survive through the second-to-last episode, so our characters are now preparing for a showdown against Sauron (played by Charlie Vickers) in the last installment of the season. Hang on tight!
