Lady Gaga says Joaquin Phoenix ‘didn’t like’ singing live in Joker: Folie à Deux

As a music enthusiast and avid moviegoer who has witnessed the transformation of some of the most iconic characters on screen, I am genuinely excited about the upcoming release of Joker: Folie à Deux. The dynamic between Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn and Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker promises to be captivating, given their shared history of pushing boundaries in both music and acting.

Before the launch of Joker: Folie à Deux, Lady Gaga disclosed that her fellow actor, Joaquin Phoenix, initially didn’t favor performing live songs during filming for the musical follow-up.

On The Graham Norton Show for tonight’s episode, Lady Gaga discussed the upcoming film, during which she aimed to portray her character, Lee Quinzel (based on Harley Quinn from comics), as genuinely grounded and establish a believable romantic relationship with Arthur.

About the movie, Gaga stated: “In numerous ways, it defies conventional categories – it’s humorous, it’s dramatic, it includes dancing, music, and all these elements combine to create a one-of-a-kind and extraordinary film.

Initially, Phoenix had issues with the live singing aspect that Lady Gaga mentioned in her statement. At first, he disliked it, which was challenging, but eventually, he performed it brilliantly.

Gaga shared that it was both enjoyable and fascinating to perform, and when she re-watched it, she felt it might have been one of the most exposed singing experiences she’s had.

Earlier, Phoenix indicated his hesitation, expressing that Gaga advocated for live singing, to which he replied, “We’re not going to – you can perform live if you wish.” (In a more conversational tone) Phoenix had expressed his reservations, stating that Gaga wanted live singing, and he countered, “Nah, we won’t do it – go ahead and sing live if you feel like it.

GaGa is scheduled to appear on The Graham Norton Show alongside Demi Moore, where they’ll discuss Gaga’s movie “The Substance.” Colin Farrell will also be there to chat about “The Penguin,” and Richard Ayoade will talk about his latest book titled “The Unfinished Harauld Hughes.

The musicians on the show this week are Jack Savoretti and Miles Kane.

The formal summary for “Folie à Deux” indicates that the story finds Arthur Fleck confined in Arkham, awaiting trial for his alleged actions as the Joker.

In the onward narrative, it’s revealed that Arthur navigates through his twofold persona, not only discovering genuine affection but also uncovering the melodies that have resided within him all along.

In addition to Phoenix and Gaga, this movie features the talents of Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beetz, and Steve Coogan as well.

Tonight, The Graham Norton Show is set to broadcast on BBC One starting at 10:40 PM. The movie “Joker: Folie à Deux” will hit theaters across the UK on October 4th, 2024.
