Netflix's One Piece Season 2 Is About to Shake Up the Canon

As a gamer who has been following One Piece since its early days and has even cosplayed as Tony Tony Chopper at numerous conventions, I must say that the recent developments regarding the live-action adaptation of One Piece on Netflix have me more excited than ever! The confirmation of Joe Manganiello as Crocodile and Lera Abova as Nico Robin is a dream come true for fans like myself.

During this year’s Geeked Week, Netflix’s live-action adaptation of “One Piece” shared exciting updates with fans. In addition to offering a sneak peek at Tony Tony Chopper in season 2, “One Piece” officially announced that Joe Manganiello and Lera Abova would be portraying Crocodile and Nico Robin respectively. Netflix also released a behind-the-scenes video, offering glimpses into the production of season 2. A sharp-eyed fan spotted a location in the footage that is significant in “One Piece” lore but has not appeared in the manga before.

In essence, while Eiichiro Oda’s original manga of One Piece is extensive, the anime adaptation needed to develop unique narratives in order to pave the way for fresh chapters. These additional stories are frequently called “filler,” and it isn’t just One Piece that has introduced exclusive characters and settings not present in its initial manga series. Other popular shonen series like Dragon Ball, Demon Slayer, Naruto, and Bleach have also done this, crafting new experiences for their main characters that weren’t part of the original manga storylines.

Hand Island Becomes Netflix Canon

If you’re not familiar with Hand Island yet, it made its debut as part of the special television episode “One Piece: Episode of Luffy – Adventure on Hand Island“. Released alongside episode 576 and the same day as “One Piece: Film Z“, this special provided a story that served as a precursor to the movie but was not initially part of the manga series. A similar scenario occurred with the initial “One Piece” episodes focusing on Luffy and Uta’s friendship, which helped set up “One Piece: Film Red“. With fans spotting a map of Hand Island in a behind-the-scenes video, there is speculation among enthusiasts about whether this island will appear in season two.

One Piece Season 2’s Locations

During a recent visit for the One Piece production, it’s possible you saw Hand Island, however, its inclusion in the live-action return of the Straw Hats isn’t guaranteed yet. In fact, it was none other than creator Eiichiro Oda who disclosed that locations such as Drum Island, Loguetown, Little Garden, and Whiskey Peak would be featured in the Netflix series, not Hand Island.

Matt Owens, the showrunner, confirmed that production for the second season of “One Piece” is underway in Cape Town, South Africa. However, the creator didn’t reveal a specific release date yet for Netflix viewers. Although it’s not set to premiere in 2024, there’s a strong possibility that the Straw Hats may return on screen next year. Given the show’s popularity on the streaming platform, we’ll keep you updated about when Luffy and his crew are scheduled to make their comeback.

Where’s Alabasta?

Although the upcoming second season of the live-action “One Piece” will introduce characters such as Crocodile, Nico Robin, Princess Vivi, and other Baroqueworks members, it seems that Alabasta won’t be the central focus for season two. The vast arc created by the desert island might be too much to fit alongside other arcs in a single season. Fortunately, the show’s popularity guarantees a likely third season for the live-action “One Piece”.
