As a seasoned movie critic with a soft spot for animated classics turned horrific, I must say that ‘The Mouse Trap‘ was an unexpected delight…or terror, depending on your perspective. Growing up with Mickey Mouse and his merry band of friends, it was jarring to see the beloved mouse don a terrifying rubber mask and wield a knife.
2023 brought us “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,” where the once gentle bear transformed into a ruthless slasher, leaving chaos in his wake much like a new Chancellor’s initial budget. However, on January 1, 2024, Mickey Mouse exited copyright, marking one hundred years since his first appearance in “Steamboat Willy.” In the latest release, “The Mouse Trap,” we see a less benevolent Mickey stalking and killing a group of teens in an amusement arcade.
The story of the mouse’s rampage is recounted by goth girl Rebecca (Mackenzie Mills), currently detained in a police station and being interrogated by two officers following the “good cop – bad cop” approach. Normally, one would wonder who will survive until the end in these slasher movies, but here it’s unexpectedly Alex (Sophie McIntosh) from the arcade, who is having a surprise party thrown by friends. As per the convention of murderous monster films, these friends include stereotypes such as sports jocks, the girl next door, hot slut, nice boy, and so on. The slaughter commences as soon as the party starts, with a knife-wielding figure in a burnt rubber Mickey Mouse mask making their appearance.
The movie “The Mouse Trap” begins with a playful intro reminiscent of Star Wars’ opening crawl, emphasizing it has no connection whatsoever with Disney or George Lucas’ Star Wars. This humorous introduction suggests the film will be a light-hearted spoof of a horror movie. However, The Mouse Trap deviates from this premise and offers only occasional humor. The real horror doesn’t become apparent until the final act, and even then it’s relatively tame for horror fans. The identity of the ‘mouse’ character is revealed early on, and it seems that person adopts the role through some form of unconscious learning after watching Steamboat Willy. This concept led our editor to experimentally make his wife watch ‘Showgirls’ repeatedly. (Cue: ‘You’re fired!’ – Editor).
The movie “Mouse Trap,” while somewhat cheesy, hints at a potential sequel in its closing credits. If this happens, it could learn from the 2024 “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” sequel by enhancing its script, prosthetic makeup, and gore for improved effect.
