An enhanced quality-of-life aspect in the latest Xbox Series X and Series S consoles is a functionality that PlayStation 5 owners have expressed a desire for Sony to incorporate into their current console. This new Xbox feature isn’t revolutionary or likely to tip the scales in favor of Microsoft against Sony this generation, but it’s certainly something Xbox Series X and Series S users will find beneficial. In fact, some users have already experienced this feature due to the Xbox Insiders program. Now, having been tested through the Xbox Insiders program, this feature is being made available to a broader audience.
Although the pre-load game update feature is a recent addition for Xbox Series X and S users, many owners might not be aware of this handy tool yet. Previously, similar to PS5, Xbox Series X|S users had the option to automatically download updates as soon as they became available. Now, the new feature enables users to download the update ahead of its release, enabling smoother and quicker access to games once they become playable.
To make things clear, if an update needs to be pre-loaded for Xbox Series X or S games, users should navigate to “My Games & Apps.” Once there, click on “Manage” and then select “Updates” to start the pre-loading process. It’s important to note that this feature is not automatically activated, so you’ll need to take these steps yourself.
Previously released games can be played instantly upon release by Xbox users who have pre-downloaded them, a feature that has been around for some time now and also offered on the PS5. However, the novelty lies in the capability to pre-download updates for Xbox Series X|S games, which is not available on the PS5 at this moment.
It’s unclear why it took Microsoft so long to incorporate this particular feature, but they managed to outdo their main rival in doing so first. As for whether the PS5 will eventually adopt this feature, only time will tell.
