As a seasoned gamer with memories of gaming consoles dating back to the days of the PS1 and the N64, I can attest that 2011 was indeed a golden year for video games. From the epic adventures of Skyrim to the pixelated brilliance of Minecraft, that year had it all. Yet, amongst the giants of the gaming world, one title often goes unnoticed – El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron.
A timeless gem from the PS3 epoch is making a comeback with a PS5 enhancement. The title we’re discussing dates back to 2011, a year that saw an abundance of exceptional video games like Minecraft, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Batman: Arkham City, Portal 2, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, LittleBigPlanet 2, Rayman Origins, Gears of War 3, Bastion, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Limbo, Dead Space 2, Super Mario 3D Land, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, Dark Souls, Terraria, Pokemon Black and White, L.A. Noire, Infamous 2, Catherine, Resistance 3, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, and Saints Row: The Third. That year was brimming with quality games, making it one of the outstanding years in video game history. However, many games from such a rich year often get overlooked.
The video game you’re referring to was created by an unknown duo, Ignition Tokyo and UTV Ignition Games. When it initially launched, it received a decent but not exceptional score of 78 on Metacritic. Sales were also low. Consequently, no sequel was produced, yet over time, the game gained a cult following, making it a bit of a hidden gem. If this doesn’t make sense to you, the game is El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron.
As you may know, the game got a remaster in 2021 that came to PC. Three years later, this remaster came to Nintendo Switch back in April. And now it is in development for PS5, though there is currently no word of as release date. Meanwhile, the original version is only available on PS3 and Xbox 360.
The original version of “El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron,” released back in 2011, offers a distinctive blend of third-person action adventure. To clarify, although a direct sequel was not produced, the game found an indirect continuation with “The Lost Child,” released in 2017. However, this RPG didn’t receive positive feedback from critics or sales, eventually being withdrawn from sale in 2023 due to licensing problems. Fortunately, enthusiasts can still find both games combined in the secondary market.
