As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that this weekend’s box office battle between “The Wild Robot” and “Transformers One” has left me both intrigued and somewhat bewildered. The former, with its heartwarming storyline and Lupita Nyong’o’s stellar performance, seems to be striking a chord with audiences, while the latter, boasting a mature and refreshing take on the Transformers franchise, finds itself struggling to gain traction.
The films, “The Wild Robot” and “Transformers One,” are following distinct trajectories at the box office, highlighting the peculiar nature of the animation industry currently. Predictions indicate that director Chris Sanders’ latest Dreamworks production is set to claim the box office throne this weekend with an impressive $11.5 million opening day. Regrettably, “Transformers One” seems unlikely to make it past second place. Both films have received positive reviews and word of mouth. The stark contrast in their box office performance may be due to the timing of the new “Transformers” release, which coincides with “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” That’s a disappointing turn for a movie that surpasses many live-action robot films in quality.
On the Dreamworks side of productions, postponing the release of The Wild Robot until after Transformers One initially seemed shrewd, given its projected earnings this weekend of around $35 million for the new animated feature. Lupita Nyong’o’s latest venture has skillfully sidestepped the recognition from Dreamworks’ animated contemporaries and the nostalgia associated with Beetlejuice. (It’s worth noting that the Oscar-winning actress is shaping up to have an impressive 2024, with her role as Roz in The Wild Robot and the intense horror of A Quiet Place: Day One.) The emotional impact of Nyong’o’s performance in her latest movie is evident, as viewers have responded positively. In an event that ComicBook attended earlier this year, she discussed conveying emotion for Roz as the robot develops throughout the film.
One key distinction between robots and artificial intelligence (AI) compared to human beings is that they lack emotions; instead, their actions are based on programming. However, in our narrative, we introduce a robot initially functioning within a highly structured program. Due to the unpredictable nature of the wilderness, she must learn to respond more intuitively, like an organic being. Despite this transformation, her actions evoke empathy from us and by the end, it appears as though she has developed feelings similar to human emotions.
Transformers One Trying To Be More Than Meets The Eye
For the latest installment in Paramount’s long-running franchise, this is all a bit of a conundrum. By all accounts, Transformers One is the best movie in this series since at least Bumblebee. Critics and fans agree that the animated feature immediately stands out from it’s live-action cousins due to a great story that’s surprisingly mature for this franchise. Transformers One also raised a lot of eyebrows for it’s use of Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry as Optimus Prime and Megatron before they were icons. However, that choice has been fine too.
It must be disappointing for Paramount to see a new perspective on an idea not gaining momentum at the box office, especially considering the positive buzz and critical acclaim it’s received. As stated by our critic Evan Valentine of ComicBook, Transformers One is regarded as the best installment in the series since the 1980s animated movie.
Valentine contends that “Transformers One stands out due to its compelling narrative focusing on the friendship between Orion and D-16. Their characters complement each other effectively, not only through the writing but also thanks to Chris Hemsworth’s and Brian Tyree Henry’s impressive voice performances as Orion and D-16 respectively. Taking over from Peter Cullen, who has long been associated with Optimus, is no easy feat, but Valentine was pleasantly surprised by Hemsworth’s performance here, striking a balance between his own character and faithfully embodying the role of Optimus’ typical voice actor. Similarly, Henry delivers a remarkable performance as D-16, portraying the transformation of an initially innocent robot towards darkness without ever feeling like a completely new character from what we have come to know.
In a very authentic way, the story presents Megatron’s downfall and Optimus Prime’s transformation into a hero. It’s gripping because it shows how these former best friends drift apart, leading to their creation of opposing armies that perpetuate an endless conflict. At certain points in the movie, you can witness the emergence of both Optimus Prime and Megatron, and these transformations feel justified due to a well-crafted build-up.
