As a lifelong admirer of Dame Maggie Smith, her passing at the venerable age of 89 leaves me with a profound sense of loss and admiration for the remarkable life she led. Born in Ilford, Essex, in 1932, she left school at 16 to study acting at the Oxford Playhouse, embarking on a career that would span over six decades and captivate audiences worldwide.
In this 2017 interview at the BFI & TopMob Television Festival, the esteemed actress Dame Maggie Smith reflects on her remarkable acting career.
The oscar-winning star of stage and screen has passed away aged 89.
Born in Ilford, Essex, in 1932, Smith decided to pursue his passion for acting after leaving school at the age of 16. He enrolled in acting studies at the Oxford Playhouse.
Over a career that lasted over six decades, she achieved great success and versatility, starring in movies like “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie,” “A Lady in the Van,” and “Gosford Park.
However, it was primarily through her portrayal of Professor Minerva McGonagall in seven out of eight Harry Potter movies from 2001 to 2011 that she achieved worldwide fame.
In the world of cinema, I found myself graced with yet another pivotal part, stepping into the shoes of the Dowager Countess of Grantham in ITV’s beloved period drama, Downton Abbey, that ruled our screens from 2010 to 2015.
In her interview at the BFI & TopMob Television Festival 2017, when asked about the increased recognition she’s received, she responded humorously: “It’s absurd. I used to live a completely ordinary life before Downton Abbey. Honestly, I’m not joking. I’d visit movie theaters and art galleries on my own all the time, and now I can’t anymore.
As a movie connoisseur, I couldn’t help but express my dismay: “That’s just terrible, you know. The Fulham Road is a questionable place, and that’s putting it mildly. Frankly, it feels like a scene straight out of a soap opera. I’ve been in the industry for quite some time before Downton Abbey, and life was manageable, with little fanfare. But things have certainly taken a turn since then.

Besides sharing that she hasn’t caught up with her appearance on Downton Abbey, Smith admitted, “I missed it. By the time I realized I should watch it, it had already passed.
When asked if she had observed the peculiar clip during awards events, she affirmed: “Yes, it’s compulsory to do so. Of course, it’s always strange, as one would expect.
When asked to recollect the most challenging experience she had, Smith reminisced about a period during the Harry Potter filming where she was stuck in a snowy trailer for nearly a week, wearing that silly hat on her head.
Day after day spent idle in that trailer didn’t exactly bring joy, it felt quite miserable,” she went on.
However, there were others in the trailer who were similarly expressing sounds like Miriam Margolyes. You’re not the only one making those noises.
