As an actress playing Carla Connor, I must say that it’s a delight to work with Vicky and bring this unique friendship between two strong women to life. It’s fascinating to explore their vulnerabilities and see how they support each other, something that Carla hasn’t experienced before in her relationships with men.
Viewers of Coronation Street have been noticing an undeniable spark between the characters played by Alison King as Carla, and Vicky Myers as Lisa.
Although they’ve always been close friends, providing mutual assistance, it’s been evident to spectators that there might be something deeper or romantic developing between them.
However, in forthcoming episodes of Corrie, a tense situation may lead them to ponder about their possible shared future together.
As a movie enthusiast, I find myself embroiled in a legal predicament this week, as Carla stands trial for ABH, following an unfortunate incident where she knocked a young man off his bicycle. This year has been quite the rollercoaster ride; first, losing my dear friend Peter, and then narrowly escaping a similar fate with Roy. I can’t help but wonder how I am emotionally managing through this tumultuous time.
Alison King: “She seems to be managing quite well under the circumstances. However, it feels like she’s juggling a lot of things, and eventually, it might all become too much for her.
At dawn, she’s found holding a letter, which unexpectedly upsets her deeply. With numerous burdens weighing on her, she becomes impulsive at such moments. This is what led her to accidentally knock a boy off his bicycle while attempting to safeguard someone dear to her heart. Perhaps it was an unconscious reflex she wasn’t aware she still possessed.
She’s relying on various individuals, but lacks someone mature to lean on. Ryan and Bobby are present, but she seems to have found a connection with Lisa due to this gap in her life.
As a devoted admirer recounting the tale: After successfully navigating the court case, I find myself back on the bustling streets, only to be trailed by the father of the lad. His menacing demeanor sends chills down my spine. Now, as I stand alone in the factory, I can’t help but wonder, just how terrified am I when it’s merely the two of us?
“She’s been driven to her limits, and she’s had to defend herself in the court. On the outside, she continues to criticize the boy to Ryan when suddenly his father appears, claiming that’s his son. In response, she retorts, suggesting he deserved it, particularly with a father like him, which might not have been wise.
On that particular day, I found myself in an exposed emotional state. A letter I received had stirred up a whirlwind of thoughts inside my mind, and before I knew it, I reacted impulsively. In truth, I had no valid justification for my actions. Despite my attempts to protect myself, I was essentially defenseless in the situation.
“She heads back to the factory, instructs everyone to leave, but suddenly a man acting erratically approaches her, yelling loudly in a menacing manner. Overwhelmed with fear, she attempts to escape, but Lisa intervenes just in time. However, Carla is left quite shaken by the incident.
Do we find out what was in the letter that’s left her so troubled?
“After arriving home, she begins drinking and discovers a letter – her divorce papers from Peter. She slips into a melancholic, self-pitying state. This was simply the culmination of an incredibly difficult day, despite her resilience, she’s feeling quite down about herself.
Is she surprised when Lisa calls to check on her?
AK: “Carla seems to be in a state of shock right now and is fully immersed in the moment. The bond between them is growing, and Carla values Betsy’s visit as it signifies something significant to her. I believe that due to Betsy taking her under her wing, they are starting to form a strong connection, like two kindred spirits.
It appears that Lisa has had a tough day, with Carla providing comfort and support. Given her recent personal experiences, Carla has a good grasp of the challenges Betsy presents; she too has just emerged from a relationship, which makes her empathetic towards some of the pain Lisa is experiencing after Becky.
For some time now, Carla hasn’t had a close female companion who both leans on her for support and stands strong independently. However, recently, Lisa has stepped in to fill that role, and Carla is finding herself relying on Lisa for the first time. This friendship, though, is becoming somewhat complex for Carla.
As I delve into the captivating narrative of this film, it’s evident that the character Lisa seems inexplicably omnipresent. This is primarily due to her connection with Betsy, which appears to be the thread binding them together. The relationship between these two characters is evolving in a way that I find intriguing, yet elusive, as it defies my attempts to succinctly define it – a bond that leaves me, as the viewer, curious about its true nature and development, a bond that character Carla seems equally puzzled by.
Are you enjoying working with Vicky and seeing this friendship develop?
AK: “I’m really enjoying collaborating with Vicky. She’s tough as nails and incredibly skilled. It’s fascinating to watch their friendship develop, as it reveals a softer, more vulnerable aspect of both of them that we don’t often see from two such strong individuals.
I find it refreshing to witness Carla forming a connection with another woman, rather than her interactions predominantly revolving around men. It seems like she’s found someone who truly understands her. The closeness and camaraderie she shares with Ryan at home is different from what she experiences with Lisa. With Lisa, she can reveal the vulnerability that she usually keeps hidden. Although Lisa comes across as quite serious, there’s something about this friendship that I find appealing, and I can’t quite put my finger on why, as in many ways they are opposites.
Could it be possible that the audience finds themselves drawn to the developing connection between them, a connection perhaps that Carla might not have fully recognized or acknowledged within herself yet?
AK: “Definitely, I think every step of this friendship is taking her by surprise. The closeness between them for Carla comes from concern, yet at times she can’t really put her finger on what this is.”
Let’s discuss Betsy as well, since she seems to have caused quite a bit of strife at Carla’s doorstep. One might wonder why Carla continues to support Betsy; what qualities does she find appealing in her?
“Carla recognizes similarities between herself at a younger age and Betsy, despite Betsy having more advantages than Carla had growing up. Carla came from nothing, while Betsy has support systems, but Carla sees vulnerability in Betsy because she’s lacking something essential and behaving in response.
As someone who grew up similarly to Carla, I find myself empathizing with her situation, picking up on the nuances she might be missing and trying to understand her better since we were both young in a similar way. Lisa seems to be struggling, constantly doubting herself and questioning her worthiness. Yet, within me, there’s a voice that echoes Carla’s strength, reassuring her that I too have been through this, and can offer guidance because of it.
Carla seems taken aback at first, but she’s actually finding it quite enjoyable because she never had a chance to raise a child of her own, having lost her daughter. Despite this, she always yearned for that experience. Carla can manage Betsy well, finding her amusing due to the similarities between their actions, as she has experienced many of those things herself. She understands Betsy.
Does it feel like you’re taking on the role of a mom with Betsy, Ryan, and Bobby around now? Is that enjoyable for you?
AK: “I’m really enjoying it! It’s a role that’s been given to Carla and it’s just a blast to act out. All these characters seem to connect, there’s a lot going on, but after Peter, I find mummy Carla quite amusing and she’s doing quite well in her unique way. She’s trying to manage them all, but she also seems rather laid-back knowing they’re all surrounding her.
