Hideo Kojima Says Xbox Exclusive OD Is "A Bit Risky"

As a seasoned gamer with decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a palpable sense of anticipation when it comes to Hideo Kojima‘s latest creation, OD. The man behind Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding has proven time and again that he’s not afraid to push boundaries and challenge the status quo. His partnership with Jordan Peele, a mastermind in his own right when it comes to horror, only serves to heighten my curiosity.

Last year at The Game Awards, Hideo Kojima unveiled a chilling new horror game titled OD, which is set for release by Xbox Game Studios. The debut trailer showcased an eerie ambiance, introduced actors expected to star in the production, and hinted at a ravenous purple dinosaur through cryptic dialogue. Although specifics about the game are still scarce, Kojima provided some insights into the project during a recent interview with Variety. The discussion primarily revolved around Death Stranding 2, but Kojima mentioned his intention to explore fresh territories in addition to the PS5 sequel. This ambition gave birth to this venture, which Kojima perceives as somewhat daring.

Simultaneously, I desired to embark on an innovative project distinct from Death Stranding. To achieve this, I collaborated with Microsoft to develop a game titled “OD“. This isn’t your typical game; it’s unique in its essence. Unfortunately, I can’t reveal much about it, and describing it is quite challenging. However, it represents a risky endeavor and a fresh challenge for me within the gaming industry.

Kojima is well-known for creating games that are daring, introducing concepts that may initially seem unconventional to both players and fellow creators. This risk-taking, however, is one of his key strengths. At the moment, it’s uncertain what OD will offer, but it seems Kojima is planning something unorthodox. There have been whispers about potential details, but nothing has been officially verified as of yet. The teaser for OD suggests it will cater to all players and “screamers,” which could possibly be a clue.

As a fellow gaming enthusiast, let me share some exciting news about the upcoming game I’ve been eagerly anticipating – OD. What makes this title particularly intriguing is that Hideo Kojima, the mastermind behind it, has joined forces with horror maestro Jordan Peele for the project. Over the past few years, Peele has made a name for himself in the horror genre with critically acclaimed films such as Get Out, Us, and most recently Nope. It was Kojima’s admiration for Nope that brought these two creative minds together to collaborate on OD. I can hardly wait to see what terrifyingly brilliant creations they will bring to life in this game!

Originally, I was a supporter of Jordan and attended the movie “Nope”. During this time, I was hosting a podcast on Spotify. I dedicated an episode to reviewing “Nope” and discovered that Jordan Peele admired my work. Consequently, we scheduled a Zoom call! Given his youth, he’s not from my generation, but after only five minutes of conversation, it felt like we were old friends. This scenario frequently repeats itself when someone’s thought pattern aligns with mine. Eventually, we arranged to meet in Los Angeles. After multiple get-togethers in LA, we discussed our respective projects. I shared the idea behind “OD” with him, and he showed great interest, so I invited him to collaborate.

It’s yet uncertain how OD will unfold, but here’s hoping that all the potential pitfalls lead to a game that matches or surpasses Kojima’s finest work!
