What you need to know

  • The Replacer was introduced in a marketing campaign for 2013’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, and reprised the role for Black Ops 3, and 4.
  • Though absent from Black Ops: Cold War’s marketing, The Replacer has returned for a new series of commercials ahead of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s October 25 release date.
  • Peter Stormare has returned to play the iconic character, with the return of The Replacer taking place in a 60-second ad that debuted during Sunday Football on September 29.
  • The Replacer takes the place of a variety of people, from the President of the United States to a firefighter and a ride-share driver, all so they can enjoy more time playing Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

As a long-time Call of Duty fanatic and someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the game’s universe, I must say that the return of The Replacer is truly a nostalgic delight! The character, played masterfully by Peter Stormare, was always my personal favorite from the series, not just for his intriguing backstory but also for his quirky and humorous antics.

A long-standing comrade is rejoining the Call of Duty franchise, debuting in a fresh, one-minute advertisement broadcasted during this coming Sunday’s football match on September 29. The character, portrayed by actor Peter Stormare (known for his roles in Fargo and John Wick Chapter 2), will once again be seen in action alongside his trademark muscle car. This allows gamers worldwide to momentarily forget their real-life duties and immerse themselves back into the world of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, where they can continue enjoying what they love most—playing more Call of Duty.

Over the past few years, game publishers have been using a creative tactic on social media, pretending to provide excuses for fans to skip work. Call of Duty is pushing this idea even further, providing a stand-in – or “Replacer” – to handle your daily tasks, giving you more time to immerse yourself in the classic prestige mode of Black Ops 6. The Replacer is dressed in his signature black suit and tie, but this time, he sports an orange logo of Cerberus’ head, representing Black Ops 6.

The distinctive black muscle car he owns has come back, with orange accents on the tires and an orange Cerberus-head emblem as a detail. The license plate now reads “BO6,” and surprisingly, the car’s air freshener is a depiction of the Cerberus head logo. This ad marks the first official reappearance of The Replacer, though his muscle car was previously glimpsed during the Call of Duty: Next showcase in Washington DC.

As a tech-savvy fanatic, I’m thrilled to share that my favorite shape-shifting character, The Replacer, will be making numerous appearances in over 30 distinct commercial spots, stepping into the roles of iconic figures from pop culture! Kicking off this exciting series is “The Return of the Replacer,” where we see this chameleon-like entity joining a family for dinner and flirting with the matriarch. In another scene, he’s found donning a firefighter’s uniform, using a fire hose to rescue a cat stuck in a tree. He even takes on the role of a ride-share driver, holding passengers captive until they rate him five stars! And, you won’t believe this: The Replacer is seen selling tacos as a street vendor! But wait, there’s more—in one commercial, he even replaces the Pope to get a chance to play some Black Ops 6. Can’t wait to see what else this shape-shifter has in store!

Initially, Stormare created the character “The Replacer” for an advertising effort tied to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (released in 2013). Since then, he has reprised his role as The Replacer in Black Ops 3 and Black Ops 4. In the latter game, players could buy “The Replacer” to use as a playable character in the battle royale mode, Blackout. However, no news or hints have been given about whether The Replacer will appear again as a playable operator in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone.

On October 25, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will be available on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC platforms. The game has seen a significant increase in players, with Activision announcing that the open beta period broke previous records for Call of Duty games. If you’re still deciding which version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 to preorder, there’s still time to make your choice.
