Joan star Sophie Turner explains real-life episode 1 Easter egg

As a fervent admirer of compelling television narratives inspired by real-life tales, I am absolutely thrilled about ITV’s upcoming series, Joan. Having witnessed Sophie Turner‘s captivating performance on Game of Thrones, I have no doubt that she will bring the same level of intensity and complexity to this role based on the notorious jewel thief, Joan Hannington.

Drawing inspiration from a true-life character and narrative, ITV’s new series “Joan” promises an exhilarating ride for viewers, as it delves into the complexities of a woman who is both a mother, a lover, a deceiver, and a criminal at her core.

The series, starring Sophie Turner from Game of Thrones, draws inspiration from the true-life exploits of Joan Hannington, a notorious jewel thief.

Showcasing particular aspects of her life on screen, we trace the journey of Joan as she eludes her former partner and eventually encounters Boise, played by Frank Dillane.

This character is often referred to as a mysterious antique seller, whose charm leads her into perilous situations brimming with excitement and romance. From the moment they cross paths, there’s an undeniable electric connection between them – a connection that is particularly cherished by the filmmakers as their inaugural scene together.

In an exhilarating moment before the launch, I found myself part of a panel discussion, and as I shared my thoughts on the upcoming series, I couldn’t help but reflect upon a particularly captivating scene – the one where Joan and Boise first cross paths in a pub. What made it even more intriguing was that the bartender who served us in this scene was none other than Joan’s son, Benny. Quite a coincidence, isn’t it?

It was amazing to witness that moment since it was when his parents first met and we got to spend time with him. The experience was incredibly strange yet delightful, making it exceptionally unique in numerous aspects.

The team responsible for the series emphasized their commitment to accurately portraying Joan’s real-life story, with producer Ruth Kenley-Letts (Stonehouse) adding: “I deeply desired Joan to be satisfied with the scripts we penned. I have always carried a significant sense of responsibility to ensure our work remains faithful to her narrative.

Regarding Turner’s preparations for her role, which was modeled after a real-life individual named Joan Hannington, an interesting fact is that they only met quite near the time of filming.

Turner shared that they hadn’t met until just before filming began, which was approximately a week prior. As a result, I had already formed a concept for the character, and I was essentially set with my plan.

Turner went on to say: “Joan’s book is filled with such unique perspectives, and reading it felt like absorbing her voice. I must have read it about nine or ten times, maybe more. Ultimately, what sealed the deal for me was meeting Joan herself.

As soon as Joan enters a space, she captivates the room like a radiant diamond; it was her unique charisma that I hadn’t quite grasped before, and now that I’ve met her, I can see why Boise, and so many others, are magnetically attracted to her, just as one is drawn to precious gems.

Joan will premiere on ITV and ITVX on Sunday 29th September at 9pm.
