As a seasoned gamer with decades worth of PlayStation memories etched into my gaming DNA, I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment upon discovering the absence of Final Fantasy characters in Astro Bot. Having grown up with the likes of Cloud Strife and Tidus, it’s a bit disheartening to see them missing from this vibrant celebration of PlayStation history.
Astro Bot is an extraordinary tribute to PlayStation, showcasing many iconic characters from various franchises throughout the brand’s history. Characters from both first- and third-party series make appearances in this game, totaling 150 VIP bots. However, despite the extensive range of characters it includes, some fan favorites are missing.
To put it simply, you won’t find any “Final Fantasy” series in the platformer genre. While there were a few nods to “Final Fantasy 7” hidden in last year’s “Astro’s Playroom”, the game itself doesn’t feature any representation of the “Final Fantasy” franchise. During an interview with Game File, the director and head of Team Asobi, Nicolas Doucet, hinted that Square Enix might not have been open to including “Final Fantasy” cameos in “Astro Bot”.
Doucet responded, “It’s challenging to offer an opinion on that topic.” He made this statement when inquired about the absence of Final Fantasy from PlayStation. “We hold every publisher’s decisions in high regard,” he added.
It’s no wonder that some fans have felt let down by the lack of Final Fantasy presence in Astro Bot, given its long-standing connection to PlayStation throughout the brand’s history. The game’s abundance of characters from other franchises only highlights this absence even more.
Astro Bot is planning to introduce additional premium bots in the near future, although they won’t necessarily originate from Final Fantasy. A free expansion pack is scheduled for release this autumn.
Astro Bot is available on PS5. Read our review of the game through here.
