By the end of today or tomorrow, it’s anticipated that “Beetlejuice” will leapfrog into the second spot, as its gross income of $250.13 million is just shy of “Batman’s” $251.18 million. The only film ahead in this race is Burton’s adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland,” which raked in a staggering $334 million domestically. Globally, the order shifts slightly, with “Alice” leading, followed by “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Batman,” and “Beetlejuice.
The sequel to the movie “Beetlejuice” had the second largest opening in Tim Burton’s career, surpassed only by “Alice in Wonderland,” which debuted with $116 million. Additionally, it ranked as the third highest opening weekend of the year, trailing behind “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Inside Out 2.
In the 21st century, international audiences have significantly increased their influence on Hollywood blockbusters, as shown by global earnings. For instance, “Alice in Wonderland” has grossed over $1 billion worldwide, with a staggering $691 million from international cinemas. Interestingly, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” surpasses “Batman” globally due to its impressive $269 million earnings from international screenings, boosting its total global gross to over $450 million. On the other hand, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has primarily made its money in North America, with only $123 million coming from international box offices.
In 2013, the film “Beetlejuice,” which was produced for approximately $15 million, earned that same amount within just three weeks from DVD sales, as reported by The Numbers. Interestingly, it’s speculated that the production cost of “Beetlejuice” was closer to $100 million, hinting at a strong belief in the potential success of a sequel by Warner Bros.
Absolutely, Disney experienced a similar situation last year. They invested around $295 million to $387 million in creating an Indiana Jones film, but it only grossed $384 million at the box office. When you factor in marketing costs, the movie needed to make approximately $600 million just to break even, which none of the previous four Indiana Jones films had even approached. In this scenario, a figure closer to $250 million would suffice…and Beetlejuice has already achieved that in North America alone.
