As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of comic book-inspired gaming under my belt, let me tell you that the proposed Marvel’s Thunderbolts movie is like hitting the jackpot for this old-school Marvel fanatic. I have fond memories of playing Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 and leading a team of antiheroes, much like the one being envisioned for Thunderbolts. The idea of connecting the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, and Netflix’s DefendersVerse is nothing short of exhilarating.
As a Marvel enthusiast, I’ve been pondering an exciting possibility: Imagine if I were to share that the Thunderbolts movie could bridge the realms of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and Netflix’s street-level heroes, famously known as the DefendersVerse. Marvel Studios has indeed mastered the Marvel Cinematic Universe, inspiring other studios to emulate their success.
The comic series “Thunderbolts” presents an unconventional gang of protagonists, led by Yelena Belova and Winter Soldier. In contrast to teams like the Avengers, the Thunderbolts have often strayed from the path of righteousness, operating on the fringes rather than within established heroic norms. Notably, their origins are linked to Baron Zemo assembling a group of villains and disguising them as heroes. A specific period in the “Thunderbolts” comics may not have been widely recognized by the general public, yet it sets the stage for how characters from Thunderbolts, Venom, and Deadpool could collaborate effectively on the big screen.
Red Hulk’s Thunderbolts, explained
In 2012, Marvel Comics launched a new publishing project called Marvel NOW!, which involved restarting all series with fresh #1 issues and new creative teams. One of these titles was Thunderbolts by Daniel Way and Steve Dillon. Unlike previous iterations led by Baron Zemo or Norman Osborn, this Thunderbolts team was assembled by Red Hulk to serve as a covert operations group much like X-Force. To fill the ranks, Red Hulk reached into his rolodex of gamma-irradiated contacts and recruited heavyweights for the Thunderbolts: Deadpool, Punisher, Elektra, and Agent Venom (Flash Thompson).
Due to his extensive experience with various X-Force units, Deadpool was a natural fit for the Thunderbolts. Venom, though currently considered a hero, still had missions in the past that made one wonder if they truly wanted to support him. Characters like Punisher and Elektra were definitely morally ambiguous. Under Red Hulk’s command, the Thunderbolts were ruthless, leaving destruction in their path, even managing to take down Leader, Hulk’s nemesis. Later on, Samuel Sterns became Red Leader, with Ghost Rider joining as well before the team disbanded.
Due to Red Hulk being in charge, the Thunderbolts adopted a red color scheme, as he himself was red. Despite Deadpool and Elektra already wearing red, Agent Venom and Punisher changed their white to red, adding a chic touch to their outfits. There were certainly some heated disagreements within the Thunderbolts, largely due to Red Hulk’s manipulations. A romantic bond developed between Punisher and Elektra, but eventually, Punisher left the team and believed Red Hulk was behind an assassination attempt on him.
Future Thunderbolts* teams can include Deadpool, Venom, Punisher, and Elektra
If “Thunderbolts” turns out to be a hit, it wouldn’t be surprising if Marvel Studios decides to produce a follow-up. However, before we can fully speculate about a sequel, we should find out what the asterisk (*) in “Thunderbolts*” signifies. Meanwhile, let’s keep our fingers crossed for a legitimate collaboration between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, which could potentially bring Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Tom Hardy’s Venom together on the same screen. Or perhaps we might see Venom encounter Anthony Mackie’s Captain America. If such encounters happen, it would bring us one step closer to seeing Red Hulk’s Thunderbolts transition from the comics to both big and small screens.
Picture this: I can hardly contain my excitement thinking about a Thunderbolts film with Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Harrison Ford taking on the role of Red Hulk, Elodie Yung reprising her Daredevil character as Elektra, and Jon Bernthal back as the Punisher. With such an impressive cast, this movie would surely capture the attention of Marvel fans everywhere, potentially overshadowing the Avengers. Additionally, introducing new franchises, much like the popular Guardians of the Galaxy series, could be a fantastic way to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe even further.
Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, the ball is in your court.
