As a gamer who has seen countless blockbusters and wrestling matches over the years, I have to admit that Dave Bautista‘s journey from the squared circle to the silver screen is nothing short of inspiring. Having grown up watching WWE, it was a treat to see Batista rise through the ranks, capturing multiple world titles and headlining some of wrestling’s biggest events.
Despite spending more years focused on acting than wrestling, Dave Bautista has never lost his affection for his roots in the wrestling ring. Before his breakout performance in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Bautista was a professional wrestler with WWE for over a decade, known as “Batista”. He rapidly climbed from developmental to main event status, earning several world titles and co-headlining both WrestleMania 21 and WrestleMania 30. Bautista began his career on television alongside some of WWE’s brightest minds, joining fellow newcomer Randy Orton in a stable that included WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair and was led by Triple H, a contemporary mastermind.
Bautista developed a strong bond with Triple H throughout his time in the WWE. The actor from Dune credits much of his success to the WWE’s Chief Content Officer, acknowledging that Triple H’s early 2000s decision to invest in him opened up numerous opportunities for him as his career progressed.
Dave Bautista Recalls Memorable Advice From Triple H
As I celebrate two decades in the gaming world, the wisdom shared by my very first mentor continues to resonate deeply with me, a seasoned gamer like myself.
In conversation with The School of Hark Knocks, Bautista reminisced about wisdom from Triple H during his pro-wrestling beginnings, a piece of guidance he’s kept close to heart while navigating his journey in Hollywood.
In the past, I was mentored by someone named Triple H. Some things he told me have stayed with me over time. For example, when I first arrived, I was incredibly nervous because I didn’t want to upset anyone. It was all about respecting the hierarchy. One day, he said something that really stuck with me: “Look man, are you here to make money or make friends? This is a business. Treat it like one. You’re a business yourself.” That comment made me realize I needed to think of myself as a commodity and my own brand. Another quote that has stayed with me was, “Always imagine everyone has a gun pointed at your head. It’s up to you how many bullets you give them,” which emphasized the importance of taking responsibility and making smart decisions in a high-pressure environment.
As a gamer, I hung up my wrestling boots alongside Triple H at WWE WrestleMania 35 in 2019, taking a loss against my mentor. Though the thrill of performing for the live WWE crowd still echoes in my dreams, I’ve made a vow not to return. I ended my career on my own terms, just as I had always imagined.
