As a long-time fan of AEW, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation for Mark Davis’s return to the ring. His absence has been noticeable, especially considering his strong performances and the camaraderie he shared with Kyle Fletcher as Aussie Open. The news of his progress towards a comeback is music to our ears!
Mark Davis has been out of the wrestling ring for nearly a year now. At AEW WrestleDream 2023, he teamed up with his longtime partner Kyle Fletcher to challenge for the AEW World Tag Team Titles against champions Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler. The match between FTR and Aussie Open was intense and lasted about 20 minutes. However, it seemed that the fight took a toll on everyone involved, as Davis is reported to have sustained a wrist injury during the contest. Since then, there has been little news about when he might return to action in the ring.
Mark Davis “Progressing” Towards AEW Return
Aussie Open could be reunited before long.
According to Fightful Select, Mark Davis appears to be making good progress towards a wrestling comeback. Previously, Davis hinted at his initial injury being linked to his wrist, but Fightful Select’s report indicates that the exact cause of his absence has not been disclosed and it is his choice to share that information. There is currently no set date for his return to action.
Though Davis hasn’t been specifically highlighted often on AEW shows, his influence by being connected with significant events has been noticeable. For almost four years, Davis has been a part of the New Japan Pro Wrestling group, United Empire. Throughout this period, Davis frequently teamed up with Kyle Fletcher as Aussie Open, winning tag titles across various divisions. Additionally, they were often chosen by Will Ospreay for trios matches when he was their leader.
Since then, the team consisting of Davis, Fletcher, and Ospreay has permanently joined the All Elite Wrestling (AEW) roster. Regrettably, Davis sustained an injury merely a month prior to when Ospreay officially signed with AEW.
Last week at AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam, I found myself cheering for the dynamic duo of Fletcher and Ospreay as they dared to challenge The Young Bucks for the AEW World Tag Team Championships. As they marched into Arthur Ashe Stadium, their alliance with United Empire was proudly displayed on the screens. Unfortunately, despite a valiant effort, they couldn’t clinch the victory. This loss seemed to deepen the tension between them, as Ospreay subtly urged Fletcher to break away from The Don Callis Family and revert back to his honorable competitive roots.
