The Penguin Episode 2’s Batman Long Halloween Easter Egg

The Penguin Episode 2's Batman Long Halloween Easter Egg

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for Batman lore, I found the latest episode of The Penguin to be a thrilling and well-crafted homage to one of my favorite comic book stories – The Long Halloween. It was like watching a masterclass on how to deconstruct and reconstruct a beloved narrative while still maintaining its essence.

Note: Reading this article may reveal key plot points from The Penguin episode 2 titled ‘Inside Man.’ ‘When dealing with an apparently impossible situation, the best course of action is to move quickly – some might say, impulsively. By tackling the most dangerous threats first… and systematically addressing each ensuing challenge in a calculated, step-by-step manner.'”

In the 13-issue comic book series titled “Batman: The Long Halloween,” penned by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, which served as an inspiration for the 2022 movie “The Batman,” we find the Dark Knight quoting his surgeon father’s words as he strategically confronts a group of villainous costumed individuals who had gathered to assassinate the powerful Gotham City crime lord, Carmine “The Roman” Falcone. The Caped Crusader manages to overpower Solomon Grundy, the Joker, Poison Ivy, Penguin, Mad Hatter, and Scarecrow. However, in the end, Falcone is fatally shot by Two-Face who has recently undergone a disfiguring transformation.

The narrative focuses on a trio: Batman, Police Commissioner Jim Gordon, and District Attorney Harvey Dent, who work together to solve the enigma of a serial killer known as Holiday. This murderer targets victims during holidays, with the first being Johnny Viti, a Falcone family member, on Halloween night. Thus begins “the long Halloween.” Among the holiday-related murders are Milos Grappa, Falcone’s bodyguard; Carla Viti, Falcone’s sister; and Alberto Falcone, Falcone’s son.

The Penguin Episode 2's Batman Long Halloween Easter Egg

The episode titled “Inside Man” from The Penguin series references Alberto’s comic character at the funeral of Michael Zegen’s character, during which old New Year’s footage of his brother causes Sofia Falcone (played by Cristin Milioti) to leave the room. Later, she meets her cousin Carla (Aleksa Palladino from Boardwalk Empire), and expresses a concern about her young niece, Gia: “Ensure you safeguard her. A female member of this Family… it could potentially lead to dire consequences for her.

Similar to her comic book persona, Sofia was infamously recognized as Hangman – a serial killer; however, in the comics, it’s actually Sofia who murders Alberto during the sequel series “Batman: Dark Victory”. In the reimagined version of “The Long Halloween”, it is Oz Cobb (played by Colin Farrell) who is carefully dismantling the Falcone family with a calculated and meticulous strategy.

A week following the Riddler, portrayed by Paul Dano, murdering Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) and demolishing Gotham’s seawall, transforming certain areas into lawless territories in “The Batman”, Oz rashly murders the Falcone dynasty’s heir after mocking his ambition to be revered like the gangster Rex Calabrese.

In the story, Oz incriminates mob boss Sal Maroni (Clancy Brown) for Berto’s death while attempting to disrupt the Drops drug operation in Gotham and extort underboss Johnny Viti (Michael Kelly) over his affair with Luca Falcone’s wife. However, there’s a complication – a captured Maroni lieutenant who could expose Oz, so he kills Ervad instead. Abandoning the plan to pin Berto’s death on Johnny, Oz makes Sofia think her brother has been avenged as Don Luca shoots down suspected informant Callisto (Berto Colon). In the end, Oz forms an alliance with Sofia as she sets out to claim her father’s position within the Family.

Through strategic moves that pit the Falcones against the Maronis, and systematically eradicating their family, Oz conveys to Victor: “We’re inching ever closer to our goal.
