Jujutsu Kaisen: What Does the Manga's Last Look at Sukuna Mean?

As a seasoned gamer who has witnessed countless battles in virtual worlds, I must say that the ending of Jujutsu Kaisen‘s manga was as satisfying as defeating a formidable boss in a role-playing game. The final confrontation against Sukuna felt like a climactic boss battle, with twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat.

The manga adaptation of ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ by Gege Akutami has concluded its journey after six years, wrapping up in Shueisha’s ‘Weekly Shonen Jump’ magazine. In the final chapter, fans were granted a last glimpse of Sukuna before the story drew to a close. The epic battle against Sukuna ended previously, leaving the remaining weeks of the series to delve into the aftermath of that momentous fight for Yuji Itadori and other surviving Jujutsu Sorcerers.

In a surprising turn of events, Sukuna’s downfall, orchestrated by Yuji and Nobara, unfolded swiftly despite their lengthy battles against the King of Curses over numerous chapters. Unlike trying to coexist within Yuji’s body, Sukuna chose to depart as a curse, suggesting his dominance had been decisively neutralized. As the series nears its conclusion, one last look at Sukuna underscores that his menace has been eradicated completely, paving the way for a more transparent future in the Jujutsu world, free from his disruptive influence.

What Happens to Sukuna in Jujutsu Kaisen’s Ending?

In the thrilling Chapter 271 of Jujutsu Kaisen, it’s me, along with Yuji and Megumi, tackling a fresh Jujutsu curse enigma – our final mission in this incredible series. As we delve deeper, I can’t help but ponder about the future of our world without a towering presence like Satoru Gojo. The onus is on us survivors to shape the destiny that lies ahead, and it seems the curses are no exception.

Due to the profound effect their methods had on people’s souls, they found themselves in a mysterious, shadowy realm sandwiched between worlds. It was here that Mahito conveyed his belief that Sukuna had been driven by revenge throughout his existence. Instead of living authentically, Sukuna seemed to be constantly burdened by vengeance. However, with his defeat, Sukuna began to contemplate the possibility of having lived an entirely distinct life from the one he chose to lead.

What Happens to Sukuna Now?

Sukuna believes he was compelled towards destruction because of his cursed power’s nature. He hints that if given another opportunity, he might alter his life’s course. At this point, Sukuna appears with the likeness of Uraume from his past, and they vanish together into nothingness. This news doesn’t sit well with Mahito as Sukuna acknowledges his defeat. In essence, since Sukuna no longer has a reason to reappear, he will no longer pose a threat.

In the final installment of the series, we discover that Yuji placed Sukuna’s last finger back in its designated shrine, as per the original storyline. He did this because it functions as a protective barrier against other spirits, but it’s significantly less threatening than before. Previously, great care was taken to preserve and safeguard the finger, but now it’s out in the open, and the shrine isn’t particularly secure. Essentially, it no longer holds much importance. Sukuna shows no intention of reappearing, and with the ghosts of yesteryears fading away, the Jujutsu world can progress peacefully, leaving its troubled past behind.
