James Wan's Creature From the Black Lagoon Snags Star Trek Writer, New Directing Details Teased

As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast with a knack for spotting patterns, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation when it comes to James Wan’s remake of “The Creature From the Black Lagoon.” With Sean Tretta, a writer known for his work on Mayans M.C. and Star Trek: Picard, stepping into the scene, this project seems to be shaping up quite nicely.

The reimagining of James Wan’s classic monster film, “The Creature From the Black Lagoon,” has secured a writer in Sean Tretta. Tretta, recognized for his work as a writer/co-executive producer on FX’s Mayans M.C. and Star Trek: Picard, will be contributing to this project.

Originally, the “Creature From the Black Lagoon” was a series of three movies: “Creature From the Black Lagoon” (1954), “Revenge of the Creature” (1955), and “The Creature Walks Among Us” (1956). Since the 1950s, numerous attempts have been made to remake the original or rejuvenate the series for a modern audience. Notable filmmakers like John Landis (“An American Werewolf in London”), John Carpenter (“Halloween”), and Ivan Reitman (“Ghostbusters”) have all considered taking on this project at some point. Additionally, the Creature was initially planned to feature in Universal’s aborted “Dark Universe,” an attempt by the studio to transform its stable of monster characters into a franchise similar to Marvel’s.

Instead, Universal has transferred its iconic monster properties and series to the duo of Leigh Whannell and James Wan, who are adopting a cost-effective strategy to innovatively revamp these franchises. Notably, Whannell helmed the critically praised remake of The Invisible Man (2020), and his reimagined version of Wolf Man (2025) has garnered significant anticipation ahead of its January release. Meanwhile, Wan is now attached to The Creature From the Black Lagoon, though specifics about his vision for the story and The Creature remain unknown, along with the budget he intends to work with. Having directed two Aquaman films for Warner Bros., Wan is well-versed in underwater-themed movies, leading many to speculate that this upcoming Creature From the Black Lagoon could be truly impressive given his dark and eerie portrayal of Aquaman’s undersea discoveries.

Both “Invisible Man” (2020) and “Wolf Man” (2025) draw on classic monster folklore as symbolic representations of more sinister real-life problems, such as domestic abuse in romantic relationships (“Invisible Man”) or between parents and children (“Wolf Man”). “Creature from the Black Lagoon” has the potential to be interpreted in various ways, ranging from an environmental allegory to a tale of revenge. The title’s reference to the “black lagoon” suggests it may lean towards an environmental message.

The Creature From the Black Lagoon remake is in development.
